I have two differing opinions to share.
Lion Facts:
Lions have been mistakenly called the "king of the Jungle," but the fact is, lions do not inhabit jungles.
While lions have also been referred to as the "king of the beasts," this is only partially true. Lions, in their habitats, are kings of the predatory beasts, but they can be easily backed down or killed by elephants and water buffalo. A pack of hyenas can also back down or even kill a solitary lion!
From Animal Planet Fansite.
Linda Sue: Why are lions considered the "king of the jungle"? Do any lions even live in jungles? I thought they all lived in massive fields.
Peter Gros: Yes, lions do live in heavily wooded areas as well as savanna and desert areas. They've become the king of the jungle because they are the largest and most feared of the large cats. During the construction of early railroads in Africa, that reputation of the "king" became well known as lions became man-eaters. However, it was mostly older lions who could no longer catch prey and therefore opted to go after humans. An adult male lion can be 500 pounds and with a full mane is one of the most impressive cats you will ever see, and one which, I believe, deserves the title of "king."

Lions have been called the king of beasts for centuries, due to their majestic appearance and position as a top predator. In addition, male lions stalking among their females and cubs may remind humans of a king lording it over his subjects. Also, male lions are the protectors of the pride - their main role is to defend the territory and the cubs from intruding males. Human kings are seen as the protectors of their country and people, and, in the past at least, would lead their troops into battle. If you call someone a lion, you are usually saying they are brave, strong, proud and so on. These are the sorts of qualities we want our leaders to have, and because we see them in lions, we like to think of them as leaders in the animal world. As people have become more and more 'civilised' and lost touch with nature, it has become common to call any wild animals 'jungle animals' - hence, the king of beasts is sometimes called the king of the jungle. This is a bit of a misnomer, since the majority of lions live on the open plains of Africa, but there is a small population of Asiatic lions in the Gir Forest of India, and this subspecies was once much more widespread in Asia. These lions are probably more fitting of the title king of the jungle than their African cousins, but equally there are other majestic top predators, like tigers, that could also be considered deserving of the title.

Although jungles around the world are rapidly disappearing, I'm still willing to bet that there are more lions out there in the bush than there are in zoos and circuses!
Why is the lion king? Well, would you want to go one on one with him to try and claim the title?

Why indeed!
They live on the savannah - the tiger should be king of the jungle.
Maybe "the jungle" refers to the tangled web of interaction between animals, in which the lion has no natural predators!
or
because he's the MANE man!! :-)

Good point. Lions prefer the open plains where there is plenty of game to hunt and kill. It is probably just poetic license. Okay, so the lion is king of the plains. Does not sound nearly so good.
