That's not much, but I would suggest a HP or a Dell. They are usually the most trusted and well known names of laptops in that price range. Also check out www.play.com it's where I would get one. A computer place would overcharge, like PC World... they suck lol...

You should check out the supermarkets for good deals. Aldis and Lidl too. If it is just for uni work don't go over the top in buying to your absolute limit. I made that mistake about eight years ago forking out nearly £900 for something I only used to type up notes and essays, some basic excel work, the odd presentation and some web use. I could have got the a machine to do the same thing for less than a third of the price. Probably even cheaper now. It is really easy to be drawn in by the more powerful machines but unless you are going to play high end games or do video editing then even the most basic model will do. Try the big computer stores for ex display or even the classified for a second hand model.

You could buy a copy of Micro Mart computer magazine, it's only £1.99 and you will find numerous adverts. There are some excellent bargains in reconditioned as new laptops with a full warranty. It's also a good magazine if you want to know a little more about how things work. Hope this helps

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/124974/rb/26866060630 - this really is an excellent buy. Decent memory, decent hard drive etc etc etc, wireless inbuilt. It's a few pennies under £400. Delivery is free is you go for the 5 day delivery option.

Oh and ditto Vista warning above - this once is Windows XP and runs perfectly.

As for the longevitiy section I might desire to pass with the HP as my previous one lasted that long with me and it replace into used when I have been given it. It replace into the Omnibook sequence and it took a beating and extreme service in so some distance as I took it on the line so it iced up, cooked and alter into in certainty abused. Battery existence is yet another challenge. The battery purely lasted approximately 2.5-3 hrs. comparable for this new one (yet another HP). even if there are non-compulsory batteries so seem into that and notice. a pal of mine basically have been given a deal on extra batteries for his so he has 2 spares that he rates up and then he swaps them as mandatory.

Dell gets my vote, sturdy and strong.

Acer's are $HIT from experience!
HP (Compaq), and Sony are also good, but might be out of your price range i would think!
