I understand how to work out run rates if winning team has batted first. but if they bat second they win by wickets. Yesterday england won by 4 wickets. how do you work it out then?

The Net Run Rate is calculated as follows:

Total runs scored divided by total overs faced minus total runs conceded divided by total overs bowled, i.e. the average runs scored per over minus the average runs conceded.

It has nothing to do by batting first or second and also by how many wickets the match is won.

During a test say Australia scores 8/500 and retires and england scores 7/501 they will have won by 3 wickets because 3 blokes didn't need to bat. I hope that helps.
I hope that is right.
