My son taught himself to become an excellent guitar player, mainly through desire. He sacrificed time away from playing sports (he is really athletic) and suffered through the sore and bloody fingertips until he developed calluses. He got instructional books from music stores, shut himself up in his room for hours for at least six months and practiced, practiced, and practiced. That was four years ago and now he is superb. You've got to have the desire and the will. To be like Santana, though, you probably need to have a natural skill and a lot of luck.

I think the first way is to find a really good teacher. I would talk to people in the music field where you live. The second thing is to practice, practice, practice. You could also watch the performances of others to help you, but remember the best players have their own style.

Look for a really reputible teacher and take some lessons. It also involves hours of practise, do you feel you are that dedicated? Good luck, maybe you'll be the next Santana. :-)

Your best answer is probably lessons but make sure YOU want to play the guitar because I thought I wanted to but I figured out after I got it that I asked for it because all My FRIENDS have one.

It might sound cliched, but with a million hours of practice it will still sound like cr@p without POURING YOUR ENTIRE HEART into it. Sincerity sounds so sweet.
