You were simply pointing out how people tend to believe everything the media says, without stopping to find the facts out for themselves.
Rarely is anything of 'human interest" covered by the news media. Nobody wants to see stories of kittens being pulled from wells and other good deeds. It appears that the blood and guts scare mongering draws more viewers and readers.
Therefore, our image of the Middle East is just as biased as a foreigner's view of America being a land overrun with crime.
Essentially, we've allowed a few bad apples to sour our view of the entire populace of the regions and religions coming under the media's fire.

Is it supposed to be a 'ha ha' joke or were you just trying to point out that the media is not 100% reality and just because you see gun crime on TV in America doesn't mean that it happens everywhere because that would be generalising? If so then it is a good comparison with Islam and terrorism. People see Muslim terrorists on TV and they immediately presume that every single Muslim is a terrorist and could blow himself up at any moment, which is terribly wrong.

Oh yeah. I did get it. But I didn't reply because I remember thinking the very same thing myself before I did actually visit and I felt guilty.
I dare say that if anyone in the States read about the spate of stabbings we've had in the UK they too might be freaked out.
But we all need to remember that news has to be eye-catching to sell. And what's more eye-catching than someone else's misery. Sad but true.
When are you coming to visit England then? You can borrow my bullet proof vest if you like. (Joke!)
