Two things are wrong with your statement. Yes England is a country BUT it is part of Great Britain (often referred to as England or UK, United Kingdom).

The European continent is a continent.... and there is an island of it's coast that is a big part of Great Britain. So that's why it is not part of the continent. It is an island. At least that's how the British like to view the world.

It is part of the European (or Eurasian) continent no matter what they say.

It is however part of the European Union (EU).

England is considered part of the continent. It does not have to physiaclly be a part of the mainland. Just like the Phillipines and Japan are considered part of Asia.

A country is usually considered part of a continent by geographical region and the type of people that inhabits it.

In this case - England is within European continent and it has has predominantly causasian as the local inhabitants.
