Totally agree. It would be wonderful if they could tell the truth and also not use the age old trick of stating a " Committee" will be set up at some date in the future to look at the 'problem'! Just a way of hoping it will go away!

Ok, i know that a lot of people will disagree with me on this, but the main thing i would like the government to do is finally make taxes fair, this has already been done to some extent on income tax, but i mean on everything that is a direct tax (e.g. - inheritance tax). The way i see to make these taxes fair is the opposite of what the common view is, i DON'T think we should tax the wealthly more, neither do i think they should be taxed the same, but equally. Have 1 tax bracket which everyone falls into, not the ridiculously high 40% that most well-off people have to pay on everything extra they have. Now that would be a fair tax. Many people will disagree with me because this means the poor have to pay the same % as the rich, yet nobody seems to sit down and realise that they are actually paying the same amount, relative to what they have. Also many people would get angry, as they feel that rich people often have no rights to be better off than themselves, yet (with a few exceptions, e.g. - some pro sportspeople[not all, i mean look at the average wages for a BBL player, something like £10,000 a year and compare that to anyone in the premiership]), most of those people worked very hard to get wealthy and should for no reason pay out more of what they have worked to have.
(Btw, it may intrest you to know that i am not wealthy, just an economics student.)
P.S - Pay doctors and nurses more, they train for ages and have a very important and difficult job to do, or at least pay their university fees.
P.P.S - In fact, make universities free, or at the least price them so that students can actually afford the teaching.
P.P.P.S. - and please stop all of this political correctness bulls!*t.

Well above all else, i would like the next government to be just honest, but as there isnt an honest politician in the world let alone the UK then thats not likely to happen.
So failing that.
1. Abolish the Council Tax, as its not spent on anything other than lining fat cats pockets
2. More care for the elderly, also those out of work (like me)
3. No 'Spin' / Cheating/Lying etc.
4. Sort out the immigration crisis, Sterner scentencies for murderers/rapists and peados
5. Bring back the great British workforce instead of letting foreigners take our jobs for less pay
6. Sort out the NHS, its meant to be free for all UK citizens for crying out loud!
7. Kick all the 'Islamic homegrown threats' out of the country we need to be strict and its the only way to stop homegrown terrorism.
8. Stop forcing war without at least looking at the facts instead of sending our troops to die in a war based on lies
9. Use the money they reap in tax and all the rest they get to getting this country back on its feet and be a proud nation again.
10. Treat our armed forces with the respect they deserve, give them decent weapons, armor, supplies and whatever else they need on the battlefield, also their accomodation.
There are a few more but not as important.

1. Put execution for homicide back on the statute book.
For all those people who are killed/murdered just retribution is needed. Those thinking of homicide would think again knowing their own lives are forfeit. The defenceless members of society , children, elderly need this legal defence. Jails would not be 'clogged up' with these felons, thereby costing the state to maintain them. The convicted still have the 'Appeal' system if they still feel agrieved.
2. Withdraw from E.C.
Great Britain has a perfectly good Commonwealth to trade with. The benifits would be :-
A common Head of State (the Queen) in most cases
A common trading currency (Sterling)
A common Legal System devolved from the English system.
A common legislature system based on the English Parliament.
The national independence of the nations involved.
Common racial origins (Anglo-Saxon)
A common language - English.
3. Bring back National Service
For all the young men who go out on a Saturday night and get drunk and end in a 'punch-up'. 'Bad Lads' army showed us all what we are missing.
These young men who want to fight when they are drunk should be brought before the court who should be given the power to draught them immediately into the army. Instead of courts giving then a slap on the wrist and/or a miserly fine, the philosophy should be that 'all right you want to fight you will go to somewhere were you can fight to your hearts content' - the army. The army will show you how to fight and how to get drunk with out becoming a blot on society. Corporals Murray, Niakis, Seargeants Weston and Rae - 'Bad Lads army' would do a wonderful job on them - that miscreants would soon be screeming for mercy. It would also aid the army's manpower problems.
4. Bring immigration under effective control.
All the male illegal foreign immigrants should be 'pressed' in to the navy. Think of the advantages.
a). They swear their allegiance to the Queen.
b). They are being paid an income, which is why they come! Probably more than they have ever earned before.
c). They are being assessed by the taxation authorities.
d). The Navy is getting its manpower.
e). The is no expenses to the Social Services it is military expense.
f). They are out of the country on a ship.!!!
g). Casually they are learning how to conduct themselves in British society - through the messing system in the navy.
h). If they refuse then repatriate them.
5. Put back the tax relief on pension funds.
Gordon Brown removed this relief in his first budget and consequently wrecked the pensions system in this country. Giving back the tax relief may help to restore some confidence in the pensions system.

Every now and again it is fun to swim against the flow.
I do not believe that we should be abdicating our own responsibilities to the Government. If we keep doing that, the Government will have to pay people to do the things that we should be doing for ourselves. Not only does that put up taxes, it usually means that the job isn't done as well as any centralised service will require a large managerial and administrative structure to support it.
I would suggest that we should all play a part in supporting and caring for our elderly relatives.
Discipline in schools starts in the home - plus as parents we should be speaking to our children's teachers to ensure that it isn't our own children disrupting the classroom.
Administrators in any organisation are a sign of centralised control. The need for administrators would lessen if the Government could trust local communities to monitor and get involved with their local hospitals - that requires a commitment.
If we are not prepared to make such commitments then we should not complain about higher taxation - all of that comes from having to employ people to look after the old, to train and employ more teachers, to perform checks on the performance of hospitals and set priorities for the NHS.

The very first thing I would look for is a very deep probing public enquiry into the dark dealings of this present government. All the spin and lies, dodgy dealing and corrupt practises that have seen taxes soar, councils able to give substantial fines for non criminal offences. All the money supposedly given to the NHS which then goes deeply into debt, cancels operations and sacks doctors and nurses.
A government which says this is the best chancellor we have ever had yet the same man is warned by the IMF that the country is in deep debt to the tune of many billions of pounds necessitating huge rises in taxes and cut backs in services.
Come on let's get at the truth for only by doing that will be ever stand a chance of getting an honest and proper working governmental system!!!

I'd like for them to make some changes to the NHS so it's more accessible for people, as at present not everyone can afford private practises and getting an appointment anywhere is horrendous. Also, I'd like a bit of a cut in taxes, but that won't happen. If they spent them better, I think I'd be less agitated about them taking so much off me!
You've made a good point about discipline in schools as well - if they gave teachers more room to deal with bad pupils, it would stop some of the bullying and make it less painful for some kids. At the moment bullies can get away with everything because they know there's enough loopholes in the system, it's too lenient. Great question by the way!

Educate everyone.
Make more facilites for the old, tax cuts, council tax cuts - but it is also the family's job to look after their elderly parent. Or do people want a government that will do everything for you, so you can palm off your old mother in a nursing home?
Teach parents to parent their children and realise that it is not the sole job of a teacher or strangers to teach their kids manners and respect. Parents should be sending well behaved children to school in the first place. (No, I'm not a teacher!)
Encourage stability in things such as the solid family unit. Not fund things that are a personal choice, SUCH AS having 5 children when you are on benefit. Bad things can happen to anyone, divorce, death etc. but then there is taking advantage...

It's hard to know where to start, such a mess has been made of everything. For a start I would like the money stolen from pension funds (stolen by Gordon Brown) paid back with interest. A decent state pension for all those who have worked for it, at a level that will support a dignified lifestyle (after all we have all paid for it). Means tested 'tax credits' consigned to the scrap bin along with the said Gordon Brown, wicked pratt that he is!
Then I would like the government to ensure that everyone who CAN work, DOES work and does away with state handouts to the lazy. Those who cannot work, for one reason or another can then be supported properly.
To bring back decent education and discipline in schools and to crack down on anti-social behaviour, drug taking and particularly, illegal drug supply and crime at all levels should have a 'zero tolerance'.
Most of the administrators in the NHS, civil service and local authorities should be sacked and made to get proper jobs, actually doing something useful, best of all making things for us to export. Reduce the number of national and local politicians and their expenses to a sensible level and make their pensions equal to those the rest of us (mere mortals) have to live on.
Sort out our public transport systems, roads, buses and railways, to give us a system that is co-ordinated and works properly at a reasonable cost.
Get the police back on the streets doing what they are paid to do rather than filling in forms.
Stop pratting around with 'global warming' and 'carbon footprints' and start taking action on the things that really matter and that they could actually do something about.
Well, that would do for a start.

I couldn't agree more, free the Police from the shackles of the PC brigade, get them back on the streets Policing and not doing paper work, back teachers to the hilt when it comes to reclaiming the class room, life imprisonment should mean life, stop chucking money at the many many layers of management in the NHS,bring back the Matron not some namby pamby team leader, bring the water companies back into British ownership and make them accountable for the leaks, put the maintenance/funding of roads back under the control of the Highway commission or what ever they call themselves this week, thus taking the financial burden off local councils, and make them bring council tax down to a reasonable level,I could go on but I'd be here all night, you go girl!! :0)

Stop asking the government to do for you and start doing for yourself. The American Constitution has a lot of good things in it that attempt to limit government and guarantee rights to the people. Most of the replies show genuine concern over freedom, immigration, Political Correctness, lack of discipline of children, poor education and high taxes.
Taxes are high when people demand the government do more for them, when it would be better to demand the government get out of the way. Whatever is done by the government will cost more and take longer as they study everything to death. Socialism stifles an economy. Look at the way Lithuania taxes. Look at privatized retirement plans in South America. Utilities may be regulated, but they react faster to demand as corporations. Railways should be allowed to make a profit and not be subsidized by taxes. NHS could provide better care if the hospitals and doctors could make a profit. Cover the poor with subsidized insurance, require those who work to cover more of the cost of health insurance, let insurance providers compete to give more than basic coverage for lower premiums. Let some workers opt for Medical Savings Accounts that grow all their lifetime, if not used for medical expenses, and a low cost major medical insurance policy. The MSA would be their money in old age to pay for any medical expenses not covered by a pension, such as a nursing home. Tax-free.
Outsourcing is due to either lack of skilled workers or lower costs. With free trade you have to compete with India where they eat rice 3 times a day and work for less money. To get skilled workers you have to educate the children, in English, and keep them in school, of some type, until they are trained to hold a job or go to university. Do not allow leaving school until it is completed, even if it has to be a government residential school with fences and guards. Educated people will demand the same for their children and of their children eventually. Apprenticeships are good.
The government should not support or establish an official government church, nor ban the free exercise of religion, even on public property. A religious display on public land would be legal as long as the government did not pay for it.
Spanking a child by hand is not abuse. Using a wooden paddle in front of witnesses is not abuse. Corporal punishment, to a point, works, because it gets the child's attention. Unruly student do not need to be suspended or expelled from school, they need a school where where they will get more attention, even if it is behind bars.
Study how other countries do things, consider the costs, think of what is most reasonable, what gives the most personal freedom and you will probably be right. Good luck in changing your system.
