If you steal music, movies or software, you are breaking the law.

Courts around the world -- including the United States Supreme Court --
have ruled that businesses and individuals can be prosecuted for illegal
downloading.

You are not anonymous when you illegally download copyrighted material.

Taken from edonkey site which has been shut down. Several of the downloaders from this site were prosecuted and forced by the courts to pay restitution. The company itself settled with the RIAA. The settlement amount was 30 Million.

Downloading music and software is considered copyright infringement.

Don't do it!

In general, yes. As long as the material is copyrighted, even when it comes from a media that you have purchased (ie. a CD or DVD that you bought), technically you should not be redistributing it in any form, unless you have the holder of the copyright's permission. A disclaimer only informs people that the material was not your own, it does not automatically convey the right to use the material. That being said, most people are fine with various fanworks as long as a disclaimer is included. Unless the creator has specifically stated that they do not want their material used (ie. Nickleback, Anne McCaffrey), you will probably be, if not legally free and clear, unlikely to be prosecuted. That being said, your question seems more along the lines of if watching an AMV is a sin or not. That's a completely different issue.

The issue is with copyright protection. The websites are providing copies of the movies and software without the copyright owners permission. If you download it, you're using it without the copyright owners permission. Both are illegal. It's also illegal to tell someone how to get an illegal copy of something.

That's in the US, though. Other countries have different copyright laws. In Canada for example, you can give a copy or get a copy, you just can't ASK for a copy.

If it is against the law in your country you are doing something illegal. If you are in USA, most of Europe, most of Asia, and downloading from these sites you can be prosecuted. If you are in a country in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that does not have copyright laws then its ok.

If you buy a stolen car you have to return it. If you knowingly buy a stolen car you can be prosecuted as an accessory.

Are you sure this doesn't belong in "Law and Ethics" section?

Any one downloading is contributing and may be charged as accessory, as they are indeed violating the copyright.

It could be argued that NO COPIES were actually "made" until someone chooses to "download". Only then were additional copies (the violations) created from the original for each download session.
