I really only drank Guinness in bars and for years I was paying an average of $5/pint. The last few years, it seemed to be more common to see the price rise to about $6/pint. I tip $1 per drink as well. I also only drank at cheaper places in the East Village, Lower East Side and in Brooklyn, basically 'dive bars'. Some places carry cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon for $2-3 per can. If you go at happy hour or other 'special' nights, they can be 2 for one. Pabst is strangely popular with 'the kids' in NYC even though I think it tastes like an armpit. I've seen bottles of Budweiser go for $7 but that's usually in a place like a large music venue where everything is more expensive.

I know nothing about the strength of the beer in NYC vs. other places in the world.

Beers are generally stronger in the US than un the UK. In Britain, beer is taxed, partially, by how strong it is. As a result, the beers are weaker.

In regards to price, it really depends on what kind of beer you want. They range from $3 all the way up to $15.

Unlike Britian and Beligium where some beer are 9% alcohol, American beers are 3.5% alcohol. Yet, in NY, you could buy beer from around the world, including Chinese Beer or Chile Beer. Price at a pub in Manhattan is way too much, price at a pub outside of Mahattan is half less, about $3.50 for a pint of Bud.

BTW most US beer Alcohol content is 5%. Light beer has a lower content.

Expect about 5 dollars, but in midtown, don't bother you'll get raped about $7-10 for 1 beer. It is true that domestic beer for the most part is weaker, but we have many microbrews that will knock you on your butt.

about 4 or 5 dollars..you can find happy hours for 2 or 3 dollars...I live in NYC but I would never drink our beer.I like Heineken or Becks mate....cheers..
