I work in a hospital. As a matter of fact, I work on a surgical floor where we recover people from all kinds of surgery.
In all honesty, you are in the best place to be. The operating rooms are the safest place to be in the whole hospital and all the monitoring that goes on when you come into recovery and out to the floor is increadible.
The doctors, and nurses who work in the hospital are there because they have dedicated their lives to their career. They love what they do and are very good at it. Surgery has the most longevity of any department in our hospital Its the most experienced area where the MD's and RNs have all worked like 20 and 30 years. I would love to be a circulator in the OR except it is too cold there. They keep the temperature cold to lessen germs.
Relax and enjoy the attention. You are in very safe hands. They will give you medication thru an IV to calm you down because they know your nervous.
Pray before you go and know you are with very smart dedicated people who care about you.

I've had two surgeries in my life and couldn't calm myself for either of them. The first surgery I was very young...about 18.
The night before that one I didn't sleep well, was tense and woke up with a stiff neck that really hurt. But I knew I had to have the surgery. I went to the hosp. 'shakin' in my boots!'. It turned out okay. The second surgery, much much later, was for a hysterectomy. I was nervous but I understand now that God has his plan for me & I have no control over that except to use my brain and think reasonably. Also, the doctor I had for my 2nd surgery had my complete trust and that helped a lot. So, after all this rambling, maybe your surgeon will give you something to calm you before you go in.
If not try and be positive, take some deep breaths, let the medical team do their stuff as they are trained to do. Tell yourself you'll get through it okay. I wish you well. Life is full of speed bumps, huh?

You are going to be nervous up until the time they give you the pre-op drugs. Personally, I never have any concerns after that. I just want out of the hospital-one cannot rest there or even get well!! Horrible environment!! You can also watch TV usually so that could relax you, or bring a book. Hope this helps!!
