Not sure if Explorer has the same parts, but on my Ford Contour, there's a part on the steering column that controls both the hazard lights, blinkers, and brake lights. (It doesn't affect the 3rd / center brake light). If that went bad, what you described happens. It's a dealer only part though.

Hey.. I may be wrong although I had the same problem on a mustang.. 3 things to look at. 1, sensor In the fuse box In the hood compartment. 2. bad connection In those areas "eg" ground, and finally there Is a little brake switch box that connects to the brake peddle It self. That box easily breaks apart due to short wires that stretch and tear. That was my problem, so I just spliced the main wire for slack sake, and I never had that problem again. As far as the blinker, I hate to tell you, but It might be the actual bar It self, and It Isn't cheap. Oh" by the way, I got a ticket for that and I didn't even know I was driving with no brake lights. Good luck In your endeavors.. Steve NYC

I agree with Bruce W... Most common concern of no brake lights and no turns/blinkers is usually the turn signal switch has messed up internally and won't work anymore or a few of the wires from being under strain have pulled from the connector on the switch to cause your concern... fairly common

Also this vehicle has nothing multiplexed for the turn signals or brake lights.. all hard wired (as in goes thru no computers)

This a frustrating problem that is out of the scope of the home mechanic. Since most cars have multiplexed wiring controlled by a computer, this will need to be taken to a competent mechanic for a proper diagnosis and repair. Ford dealerships are expensive and I've had little luck with them finding and solving the problem the first or second time.

its most likely a bad turn signal switch or broken wire to the switch. remove the plastic covers on the steering column and check for a broken wire going into the top connector. I have seen this more than once. if no broken wires then its probably the switch, turn signal/multi-function.

if its not the switch, bulbs,or fuses its most likely in the wires.
if its still under waranty take it in for a once over otherwise take it to an auto-electrician he'll hook it up to one of his high tech machines and tell you exactly what it is in a jiffy.
