I have a 14 year old tabby and she has lost so much weight. She broke her paw 2 years ago and slowly lost weight. She does have alot of energy though. She loves drinking water, but cannot tell if she is eating. I was thinking of locking her in bedroom with some food. I have 2 other cats also, so that is why I cannot tell if she is eating. I bet she weighs no more than 5-6 lbs. Any responses would be appreciated.

She might have a health problem. My cat was losing weight - we took her to the vet and found out she had cancer :-(. Poor girl died a couple months later. She was 13.

Take your cat to the vet to rule out any health issues like what mine had.

Feeding her separately sounds like a good idea. You might also consider giving her kitten food because it has more calories. However, it might be time for a visit to the vet to discuss the weight loss. Sometimes when cats get older they are less interested in eating and sometimes their digestive system doesn't work like it used to. (Sorta like humans when we get old). Have you inspected her teeth?

You didn't say what kind of food you were giving her, but if you give her a little canned kitten food on a paper plate and warm it slightly (barely warm) in the microwave she'll be able to smell it and might be more interested.

I have heard that there are preparations you can get that will stimulate the cat's appetite, but I'm sorry I don't know where to get them. Question for the vet?

I hope all goes well for you and your elderly tabby.

I think it would be a good idea if you fed her in a separate room from the other cats, until you can see how much she is eating. Give her extra food if she has been eating what you give her. If she is real active maybe she needs more food. First you need to find out how much she is eating. She is eating something or she wouldn't have the energy you say she has which is a good sign. Why not take her for a vet check up just to be on the safe side? It will put your mind to rest.

if ur not sure if she eats why don't u get her out at her food time for a day or two and give her food in a seperate room where she can eat alone u be there with her to monitor and maybe shez losing her appetite coz of her age too or else she must have got bored of eating the same food or else some internal issues with her health u need to take her to the vet thats wat u shud be doing if ur really concerned coz they sure wud know wats going on inside of her body. There are many seasonal changes and body adjust according to that but take her to the VET she is in need for a check up. I had my own cat he stopped eating but i took him to the vet and there sure was a problem with him so got it cheked and he recovered nicely. Hope this info helps and ur cat gains her lost weight back. Cheers and health to ur tabby.

Take her to the vet.

Hyperthyroidism is classic in older female cats - they eat well but still lose weight. If she has in fact lost her appetite, there may be many causes, and it is important to catch the problem as early as possible, especially as she's old. I doubt the broken paw has anything to do with it.

You need to get your cat to the vet NOW.
Could be very serious---losing weight and drinking alot of water---that doesn't sound too good.
If you want to keep her---you need to get her some help--she could have diabetes or anemia.
Good luck.

Try looking at his/her tooth. My cat had tooth ache for 1 year and we did not know. Poor cat suffered so long. He lost so much weight. We finally found out and had his tooth taken out. Cost us $800. But finally he gain weight and we had our fat cat back.

So in cat years that is approximately 98 years old. We have to learn to let go. I believe she is on her way to the other side. She is like an old woman. Talk to her and tell her it is alright if she goes to the other side. Life continues after death. I know how hard it is because I have four babies. I had to have my dog of 14 years put to sleep. But life goes on and always has and always will. She might be in pain. Gravity grabs hold of all of us. She has had a good life. Please learn to let go so she can pass to the other side.
