Are our souls and minds different things? I don't understand what crosses over when we die. Is an insane person on Earth insane after death for example? I would love to hear from someone who has had an NDE or something although I will take answer from anyone knowledgable on the subject.

i personally think they are the same.. but different too.
if someone were mad here on earth.. doesnt mean their soul is mad.
its like our basic traits thoughts and feeling are shared by our soul and brain... just separate levels of thinking is done.

alot of the time too... events here on earth alter our physical mind set... causing us to change.... i would think that our soul would learn from the experience.. but wouldnt be affected by it as much as our physical state would be....

they are different.

a person who is "insane" will NOT be after death, such issues are problems attached and involved with the body.

compare it to the 3 parts of the mind that freud came up with... the ID Ego and Superego,
that the ID is the animal-mind. the contribution to the mind from the physical, organic animal that we occupy. things like physical pain, nutritional cravings, fight/flight responses, ect, these are things generated by the animal-mind.
the Superego being the "true self" (sorta), the soul, the part that continues after death. it "remembers" the self as we know it, but isn't defined by it like we (generally) are.
and the Ego being essentially the "mind" as we know it, the balance and personality created in the fusion/attachment between a soul and the body. the animal side alone might tend to behave in ways that would be socially inappropriate, and the soul-side alone might forget some of the hazards of being corporeal.

many psychological illnesses are primarily due to physical issues, though some have a chicken and egg relationship with the soul aspect (sometimes it doesn't attach just perfectly, sometimes things don't work just right, some limitations and filterings not adjsuted properly... various occasional issues) and when the soul is cut loose of the physical body... poof, the problem is entirely gone. like if a dog winds its tether around a tree and its choking, if the fastender holding the collar to the tangled cord breaks... the dog stops choking.

some will argue that physical issues shouldn't hinder the soul if its there. this is of course quite silly. it is like saying that since your behind the wheel of a car, and your driving down the hill, the brake line being cut is no excuse for you not making the brakes work and stopping.

some people don't even try to get it. Anaestethea? it doesn't effect the soul. but YOU and who you are, your own memories, are filtered through the body's own mechanical resources as well as the soul. the soul is still there and fully aware. but your body-mind, and physical brain are disabled. so "you" will not readily have any awareness or recollection. and theres utterly no reason your soul would share that information with you. "you" are not neccesarily/entirely aware of your whole higher self(complete soul) and your true self would know that theres really not much to be gained from you having awareness of that time, so its stored away out of your concious reach. honestly this seems ratber obvious to me. but I see the world rather diferently than most.

and again, like the cut brake line thing. warping the perception of the surface does not change the reality.

if you or anyone else is interested in seriously discussing it or asking further details on my view of things, feel free to e-mail me.

If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.

How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain - We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage. Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.

So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void.

thats a really good question :)
i believe that its your soul that controls your mind, afterall, your mind has power over your body and movements and speech etc. But what makes people m ove think and speak differently? it must be your soul. So i think that its your soul that crosses over (if thats what happens) as it is what makes you you really.
Insanity might just be couruption or damage to the mind, not soul, so maybe they can find peace after they have 'crossed over'.

TRIUNE

BODY
SOUL
SPIRIT

Your BODY is the flesh that you reside in until the Lord redeems the said body.

Your SOUL ~IS~ your MIND, where all of your thoughts and actions come forth,

Your SPIRIT is ETERNAL- your spirit will carry on in heaven or hell, for eternity/ based upon whether or not you simply choose to SIMPLY believe that GOD had indeed raised Christ from the dead. Not only BELIEVE, but maintain....in that I mean that you SEEK HIM daily by the reading of His Word (the KJV Bible).....and the Holy Spirit will thus guide you in all that you do.

It is truth.
Ive seen some amazing stories of NDE and of the experience of entering HELL, and likewise HEAVEN.....all across the earth, these testimonies are eerily SIMILAR/ I do not believe they are lies.

GOD BLESS YOU,
In Christ our Redeemer~

i havent had a nde but i've read about those who have. but they dont talk much about the question you asked.

your soul is your mind, will and emotions.
you are a spirit being. that lives in a body.
when you die. you are intact of all but a physical body. but you'll have a spiritual body consisting of the same basic anatomical shape as your physical one.

The soul is, like our spirit, an aspect of our mind. It is the way we perceive who we are. When we go - it goes.
