The tourists went (of or from) museum. However, "ir de" may mean "to go to" so the word, fueron, may be translated "went to." However, there should be a definite or indefinite article to make the sentence make sense. "Los turistas fueron al museo" could be translated "The tourists went to the museum."
"Los turistas fueron del museo" would also probably be translated "The tourists went to the museum." But could also mean "The tourists were from the museum."
Fueron is the third person plural conjugation of "ir" in the preterite or past tense. Ironically, the conjugation is the same for the verb "ser." "Ir" means to go and "ser" is a form of the verb to be.
So the sentence might be translated, "The tourists were (of or from) museum."
Either way, I'm not certain that the grammar is proper in the sentence you gave due to the lack of a definite or indefinite article.

It means "the turists went to the museum." So the proper translation for 'fueron' is 'went' but only for refering to the third person in plural. Then the correct translation for 'fueron' would be 'they went'.
Hope this helps!

"fueron" means (a) they went and (b) they were. In this sentence it means "they went". One reply has given the translation "they went to the museum" but with the word "de" it means more somelike like "went round the museum" or "went visiting museums".
