Because it's our heritage. A lot of people in the South have ancestors that were Confederate soldiers. And I get so tired about the blacks arguing about slavery and all that bullsh*t. The MAIN reason that the confederacy seceded was because of State's rights. They did not want the National government telling them what to do, when the Constitution clearly says that States have first say in most things. Another thing was industrialization. The south did not want Northern business owners taking their land and building factories. Slavery was a very little part of it. The Union could have cared less whether the south had slaves or not. Lincoln did not even want to free the slaves at first. And the flag that you are talking about is the Confederate Battle Flag. This is easily confused with the "Stars and Bars," or the Confederate States flag. This was the official flag of the CSA.

there was only 24 days without an official confederate flag in 1861. march 4th 1861 was the date of the 1st flags adoption
1st offical flag is the Stars and Bars with blue canton (left top corner) with stars on it and 3 stripes red/white/red going down the flag
November 1861 is the month when the confederate battle flag (rebel flag/ southern cross) was first issued to the confederate armies. this was because the Stars and Bars and Stars and Stripes were hard to tell apart when the were furled up on the poles and with all th dust from the battle it made it even harder to tell the difference.
they then decided to change the official confederate flag (Stars and Bars) because it looked too much like the Stars and Stripes
so after much discussion and proposals on may 1st 1863 we get the 2nd official Confederate flag- a canton (top left corner) containing the confederate battle flag (rebel flag/southern cross) and the field (rest of the flag) plain white. this flag was known as the 'Stainless Banner'.
but now people were sayin the flag could be mistaken for the flag of truce with all the white on it. so on March 4 1865 we get the 3rd and last official flag of the Confederacy.... the same as the Stainless Banner except for the additon of a broad red vertical stripe at the fly end of the flag.
so in conclusion what you 'heard' was completely incorrect!

Yes there were 3 or 4 different ones use. The most notable was the Confederate Battle Flag also known as the Naval Jack. Not exactly the same flag...the dimensions were a little different. It is the one with the red cross with stars on a field of blue. If I recall correctly it is also know as the St. Andrew's Cross Flag and The Rebel Flag.

Where have you been all your life---under a rock? My God! They're still arguing over the rights of some states to fly a smililar flag of the Confederate flag over their state offices because "it offends certain people."
To answer your question, Yes there was a Confederate flag during the Civil War. Actually several at the start of the War based upon the same design, but the Confederate Congress passed a law stipulating one flag.

Flew on Confederate ships from 1863 to 1865. The CSA used a number of flags during the Civil War, but the Naval Jack (as it's sometimes known) did fly during the Civil War.

Well, yes, that is how it is called the confederated flag. The Confederate flag (red backgroud with blue X and white stars in the blue) is adapted from St. Andrews Cross, which is a stylized X. Each star represented the number of states that seceded form the union and formed the confederacy.

There were two confederate flags. One was the "stars and bars" battle flag that was the standard one used. The other was the "state" flag. The war was over in 1865. The Confederacy ceased to exist after that.

from 1861-1865 there were confederate flags. the bonnie blue, the stars and bars, the battle flag, the 1st,2nd,and 3rd confederate flags. and the naval jack which is more rectangular than the battle flag. people use it to represent the south more today though.
