>>It's soo strict. The church sets you up to fail... I was excommunicated for having a boyfriend who lived with me and I was not married... HELLO - I would rather see if we are compatible before making the huge plunge..
First, don't you know that statistics show that couples who live together before marriage are 50% more likely to divorce, or something like that. I have a friend who divorced her first two husbands, and the length of their marriages was directly proportionate to the length of time they lived together before they were married. The first marriage, they lived together for seven years, their marriage lasted less than one.
Second, you should have known the church frowns on sexual immorality, which means no sexual activity with ANYONE (of any sex) who is not your legal spouse (of the opposite sex; no same-sex marriages). That was part of the covenants you made with God when you were baptized.
I have noticed that the most successful marriages are those where the couple has discussed, in great depth, and with much prayer, and sometimes even fasting, how they want their marriage to be, what they expect, how much they are willing to work together, etc. My advice is, to find couples who have successful marriages and ask them, and to counsel with the bishop, and/or an LDS marriage counselor before marriage.

Sam so far is the most closest to the correct answer. For a more general idea, When someone does something that is illegal, or immoral which can and or has a eternal effect another person or persons in a harmful way. These things include infidelity, which effect partner, kids, ect... Drugs... same effect... pornography....same effect.... Illegal things like killing, ect.
Things like not paying your tithing, or not having your special underware on does not make you excommunicated. These things only effect one person... YOU.

There is no one thing that a person has to do to be excommunicated. It all depends on the person and the leaders of his congregation.
The purpose of excommunication is not to punish the person, but to help him to repent. When a church court is convened, it is done with love.

There are different ways in which to be ex-communicated but just know that ex-communication is not absolute just so long as you have true repentance.
Murder
Denouncing the teachings of the Church
Are just 2 examples.
I see that there are a lot of angry and snide replies to this question most of which are not true.
If you really want to know then contact the local Bishop at the Ward nearest to you.

Realize that it is a cult and join a church which preaches the Scripture and not some cock and bull story made up by Joseph Smith, or Mohammad.
