I agree that for somebody dwelling in the U. S., Spanish is a useful language. Mandarin chinese language is likewise a stable determination. One language which hasn't been pronounced (and which has greater audio equipment worldwide than Spanish) is Hindi. i might advise gaining expertise of all of those, in case you have the possibility! One attention, nevertheless, is that the Hindi writing equipment is plenty less complicated and greater hassle-free to be taught than the chinese language writing equipment--and the inhabitants improve of India is at as quickly as outstripping that of China.

Good question! You probably also want to consider how many speakers there are. "Useful" is also dependent upon what your field of reference is. Science, the arts, diplomacy, travel all would yield different lists.
But, off the top of my head, I'd go with
1. Chinese (Mandarin - more speakers than any other language)
2. Spanish (besides Spain, all of Latin America )
3. French (France, parts of North & Central Africa, Quebec, other ex-colonies, although the number of speakers may not be that great)
4. Arabic (covers a LOT of territory in the Middle East and Africa)
5. Russian (if you're looking at geographical area....)
... and somewhere in there should probably come Hindustani, India's major language, in terms of number of speakers. But lots of them also speak English . . .
