Why don't they just read the bible or the koran? They have all these burning questions about religion. Why not just go to the source?

I am not an atheist. Although, I do not follow any mainstream religion. I have read the bible and I am far from illiterate.

Most people are illiterate. Religion has nothing to do with it. A will find a higher percentage of god fearing people illiterate than atheists. Most people who are christian have not read the bible. The only reason they think they're christian is they're parents told them they are, told them what to believe. I think that if you read the whole bible, you would not be a christian either. That book is unamerican. It is full of faschism, racism, and general bigotry.

Deuteronomy has about 20 reasons to kill your neighbor including having sex outside of marriage and don't tell yourself that god used to believe that and jesus freed us from the old law. If god is, was, and always will be perfect then god didn't change, people's perspective changed, because of jesus. People's perspectives should continue changing and growing. As long as that book is out there convincing people of lies, like, everything you need to know is in this book, those people will never look for Truth. Jesus didn't make the book perfect, either. He made it better. All of the answers to life questions are not contained in 1 book and they never will be. They cannot be.

If I was satan, I would want people to believe that no matter what they do they can be forgiven.
I would want them to believe that there is only one way to god, through me.
I would want them to believe in demons and satan. Now they can be easily convinced to go to war, to fight other people with a different belief system, by telling them that the other people believe something different, so they must be working for the devil.
If I were the devil I would want people to believe that all the answers are in one book, so they will stop their pursuit of Knowledge and Truth.
If I were the devil I would have people hand out bibles for me.

1) that's not the definition of illiterate.
2) a lot of them DO read the bible and koran.
3) who says that the bible/koran are the source of religion? do you have any idea of how many other religions came before Christianity? and that almost all christian holidays and symbols were "borrowed" from the pagan religions?

For 21 years I read the Bible for a half-hour every day. Every single week I went to church on Sundays, and on Wednesdays listening to the sermon for an hour. Yes, my parents were very religious, and they were both college educated. And I too am college educated. And I am an atheist because I no longer believe there is a god or an after-life in heaven or hell.

At least in my own estimation, I am far from illiterate, even in things Biblical. As for me, I believe that evolution makes much more sense. And I believe Science fill find the true answers to all our earthly problems.

I suggest that you widen your sources of reading. Perhaps you too will find that there is room for other "truths."

Do go and find the meaning of illiterate. You won't find the answer in the bible or the q'ran.
We won't find the answer to any question we may have about religion in those books either. All we will find are more questions.
Incidentally, we atheists do NOT have burning questions about religion. We do have the answers, though.
BTW, your construction of your question would strongly suggest that you are the illiterate one. Perhaps English is not your first language. If so, you are forgiven.
Regardless of how many times we give you the answers, our message is just being ignored.

I think you have been misinformed.

Atheists are not the people who have burning questions. They're the ones who've decided that there is no god. In fact, the word "atheist" is derived from a Greek root meaning "without god".

Agnostics are people who are skeptical but are not willing to discount the possibility of god's existence. Some of them might have burning questions. I can't say.

Some atheists and agnostics come from religious backgrounds and have, in fact, read scripture. Others have read those texts out of curiousity.

I don't know of any evidence that non-religious people are unable to read, which is the meaning of "illiterate".

Hey! I have read LOTR and Harry potter. Thats enough popular fantasy/fiction. Don't ask me to read any more.

If theists were all very secure in their faith, they wouldn't mind those questions. The very fact that they start calling people illiterate when they say 2 + 2 =4, shows who is really blind and illiterate.

Real God wouldn't mind a questioning mind. Isn't it better to ask questions before believing, then to believe by default and follow blindly?

I would frankly buy a car after I was sure it was the right one, and you can't always find out by reading the promotional material, Especially since law allows anyone to start any church or sect and make any ludicrous claims, and there is no consumer court to run to after your dead. AND I would want to treat something so important like God with more respect than an inanimate car.

Real God doesn't have to hide behind obscure quotes in man made texts. Real God doesn't need organised religion.

Or that's what I feel. Real God would never want to hoodwink people, and love them for believing in him/her with eyes open, and not want people to rush in for all the wrong reasons.

And if that God ain't Christian/Muslim/indu/Buddhist Gods, than those Gods are false.

A real God would allow an informed choice. And that can't be made by reading texts written by men "claiming" divine authority. No word written by a man could possibly capture the glory of God in a couple of thousand pages. You have to look outside and look within.

Without that, you can't grok God.

1) Illiteracy means you can't read. Any literate person knows this. ;)

2) The majority of religious people haven't read their holy book. Are they illiterate too?

3) Reading a holy book does not give you insight into religion, it just gives you awareness of its background. I've read most of the Bible, most of it just shows how unaware people were of the outside world back then. It didn't give me religious enlightenment.

illiterate??? ahahah!

We are smart and that is why we DON'T believe the Bible. We only ask questions to try and understand what makes you so deluded.

It's a proven fact that the more intelligent you are, the more likely you are atheist.

Only a fool could make such a general statement.

We've gone to the source, and saw it for what it was... a bunch of lies.

Atheists are the most educated people you will find. The more education someone receives the less likely they are to fall for such absurdities as those found in religion.

Firstly, I suggest you look up the definition of illiterate. You can find it in one of those strange book things called a dictionary, so long as the fundies haven't burnt them all.

Secondly, it's always the questions posed by fundamentalist christians that suggest a high level of illiteracy amongst religious people. Many are just pure gibberish and completely unintelligible.

Atheism. You know it makes sense.
