1) contact your phone provider - say you are being harassed by that number

2) contact the police with the same story.

I think you are right in considering this a scam - if they really need to pass this to you, they`d call in person, or mail you.

First piece of advice - NEVER call the number they give you. Remember that other old scam, where they try to con you into calling a phone no that appears to be local or toll-free, then turns out to be off-shore & they charge hundreds of dollars to your phone bill. If you feel the need to contact the IRS or Microsoft or whoever, then look up the real legit phone number. Same goes for websites - make sure you only log onto the REAL one. And NEVER open any e-mail that you don't recognize, or that could be disguised to look "official", or if your best friend suddenly can't type in proper English, or apparently starts offering you Viagra etc. Remember that the IRS, Microsoft and law firms offering compensation for medical injuries etc. NEVER make cold calls. If you do answer the phone NEVER give them any information and NEVER confirm any information - not even your name or phone number. I've been getting so many of these calls - what's funny is that they're ALL coming from the same bunch of losers - I recognize their voices now!! One guy called himself Peter, said he was from Microsoft & wanted to fix my computer. The next week, he was from the IRS, saying that there were three sheriffs & two judges on their way to my house to arrest me - his name had miraculously changed to Johnny Smith, but his Punjabi accent was so thick, I just burst out laughing & told him mine was Indira Ghandi. Just how dimwitted are these clowns? If I wasn't fooled the first 25 times they called, why do they persist in calling? I usually ignore them or occasionally mess with them just to tie up their phone lines & run up their phone bills - serves the buggers right.

Look on the ICSTIS website. They monitor premium rate phone calls - not sure if it covers 0845 and mobile numbers too, but you can input numbers and it will come back with a report as to whether they're investigating the owner of that number. You can also report suspected fraudulent phone use.
I input the 0845 number but nothing came up. Try the mobile number, and if you get no joy, click on the "for the public" section where you can make a complaint.

Yes It's a big scam. Getting you to call a premium rate number or even getting your details to make a "subscription charge". Take a look at http://www.grumbletext.co.uk

If it is a real person on the other end, simply tell them to remove you from their list. If it's a machine, I heard that if you push random buttons repeatedly it confuses the machine (like maybe it thinks it's reached a fax maybe?) on the other end and it will stop calling. Not sure if it works or not (never tried it), but it wouldn't hurt to try.

When they hang up, dial *57. This puts a trace on the line, and notifies the phone company. Then call the cops, and tell them the # on your caller id keeps calling, and it is getting to an extent of harassment. Then when they call back, have them identify themselves, and why they are calling. And tell them if they keep calling, you will contact federal agencies as well, and that you have notified the cops.
