There are a variety of exercises that build up the "butt" without putting on a lot of weight.
I am a walking advocate, but to affect the glutteal muscles (aka the"butt") you need to walk briskly uphill (also a cardio vascular exercise). When you exercise in ways that tone your muscles, they get firm and usually larger.
A really great way to do this is performance dancing. It's called a dancer's butt. Ballet is probably the best...sorry if that's not your forte (strong point).

no sprinting and stairmaster machines tend to help increase your butt muscle size
