All it takes is gaining awareness. Not an easy task for such a conditioned and reactionary mind, but one would not believe how easily a trickle can turn into a sea.

Religion is not the culprit. After all, it's just a word. It's the practice of those who choose to take someone's word for it rather than seek truth through one's own experiences that is the danger that's implicated here.

Ceasefires and fair negotiations. The conditions must be conducive to peace. Both sides and any other involved countries and/or governments must back off and only involve themselves for the sake of guidance and assistance, instead of calling the shots.

It doesn't always work, sadly. Azerbaijan, a country badly victimized by the conflict over Nagorno-Karabaikh, is willing to negotiate a peace settlement with Armenia. Armenian seccessionists forcibly removed Azerbaijani settlements on their own lands and committed massacres and hate crimes against them. They took their property, burnt and looted villages and seized twenty percent of their territory. Over 800,000 refugees have been permanently displaced in Azerbaijan. Still, they are willing to negotiate with the Armenian government and offer a greater degree of sovereignty for the Armenian locals in return for their land, a ceasefire that is permanent and the right of return for the original Azerbaijani inhabitants, who make up 25-35% of the population in the area. Armenia refuses to negotiate.

Palestine chose to elect a group focused on the destruction of Israel and have refused fair and generous peace settlements based on the land for peace model and ruined their own opportunities for economic prosperity, independence and democracy with the second intifada. What 'started it off'? Ariel Sharon visiting Temple Mount, which is located where Haram al-Sharif is. For visiting a sacred holy site in Judaism, Palestinian protesters started throwing rocks, rioting and burning the Israeli flag. Some soldiers shot at them and then it went downhill from there.
