The pain you are having is caused by TMD ( temporal-mandibular disorder). It is in caused by excessive strain on your TMJ (temporal-mandibular joint).
Basically you probably clench or grind your teeth, causing your jaw muscles to tighten up. Excessive chewing, like gum or candy, can also cause this muscle pain. It may come in phases, for a few months you are great, then a few months it hurts really bad. A lot of people clench or grind their teeth when under a lot of stress. You may do this during the day, causing your body to do the same thing at night in your sleep.
The pain is in your neck because it is reffered pain from the masseter muscles (jaw muscles), which are connected closely to the temporal muscle which could also cause headaches on your forehead or sides of your forhead.
You should try to not chew gum, or anything hard. Dont open your mouth wide either, like to bite into a big sandwhich. Depending on the severity of your TMD, this could cause 'lock-jaw' where your mouth becomes hard to close or open. This is caused by the muscles being inflammed and fluid building up in the temporal joints, and sometimes a disk located in the temporat joint will slide out of place.
Best thing before it gets worse: take a warm, damp washcloth and hold it on the side of your face to let the heat penetrate the muscles and help them relax. Do this at least 3 times a day for 3 days and you should notice a difference. If you are not allergic or have any reason not to..you could also try taking 800mg of Motrin 2 times daily, because at that level it is an anti-inflamatory and will help the muscles in your jaw. Try to make a daily effort by not constantly keeping your teeth closed down together
hope this helps!!!
