Place veggies in a strainer over a pot of boiling water so that the water is not touching the water, then put the cover on the pot. Cooking time will vary depending on the type of veggie you're steaming. Check periodically until it's done to your liking. There's no wrong way to do it and you don't need any special equipment.

There are a couple of ways. You can steam veggies in the microwave by putting just a couple of Tablespoons of water in a safe fairly flat container with lid, your veggies (only one layer deep) into the pan, cover and cook (steam) for a couple of minutes, checking every 30 sec or so.
The other way, is to use a saucepan and a 1/4- 1/2 cup or so of water into the bottom of it, get yourself a metal steaming rack or basket that collapses into a nice flat item when you are through using it--(all of 4.99 at the local grocery store) fill with veggies and depending on how big you cut them up or what exactly they are, let the water come to a boil, cover and set the timer...abt 4 mins, and then check every minute or so until they are done. Make sure the water doesn't get used up or you will burn the pan and make an ugly mess.
It is pretty simple, easy and most healthy to do veggies this way. Good luck.

the ebst way to stem vegetables is with a steamer. This will include, a pot, an insert for a pot that almost looks like a strainer, and a lid for said pot.
First, boil some water in the pot with the lid on. the optimal level of water is just below the steaming insert. once the water is boiling, put the vegetables into the strainer like insert and replace the lid. Depending on the vegetables, time will vary, for softer vegetables like brocoli and cauliflower, it will take less time, just a few minutes. the best way to tell if they are done is to check up on the vegetables and poke at them with a fork to measure firmness. you don't want them to be mushy.

I just wash the vegetables, and put them in a pot that has a little over an inch of water in it and place a lid on top of the pot. Then, you just heat the pot on the stove set on a medium setting. You just steam them until they are at the texture you want and drain the excess water. That seems to work well for me. You can also buy small steaming baskets that you put over top of a pot of some sort. I don't find it necessary though.

You generally have a container, like a large pot, filled with water. Then you place the vegetables on a platform that keeps them above the waterline, place a lid on top that covers the entire top of the pot and let them steam.

I usually wash them really good, then put them in a frying pan with a little bit of water and maybe a splash of olive oil with salt and pepper. Then take a peice of tinfoil and lay it over the pan and cook on medium heat until desired tenderness!

I use this: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-297046-Food-Steamer/dp/B00005OTZ6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-5155799-2302300?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1176352313&sr=8-1
It's so easy, the cooking time for each vegetable is right on the steamer itself, so it's super easy.
Easy and fool proof = my kind of cooking.
