well, since you asked for a test....the test that i was taught was you pull out a hair and hold on to both ends a pull gently. a healthy hair should be like a "spring" and be able to stretch a little. a dry hair will break easily. however, i think it's easier to tell by just feeling it. does it feel crispy like straw or soft?

If your hair is soft & shiny & you've been using conditioner, it's probably not dry.
If you need advice on the right shampoo and conditioner, I suggest getting anything that says "repair, protect, renew" etc.(Personally, I like Pantene.) Some bottles will also say "for dry hair." They will treat it and within a few days or so you should see improvement.

If it looks like mine does now. The strands will be rough looking or wiry. Grab a handful and squeeze it in your hand - it would feel or sound crunchy. Would be all puffy and stray hairs would stick out

does it sounds crunchy?
look at the ends are there a lot of splits or lighter parts?
section off a small part and twist it do a lot of pieces stick out?
is it not shiny?
is it not very soft?
if you said yes to those its probably dry
pantine pro-v moisture renewal or garnier are the shampoos i use to keep mine moisturized. a leave in conditioner or deep conditioner also will help a lot.

if your concerned about having dry hair you can get shampoo for dry hair which will hydrate your hair if it is dry and if it isn't then it will just keep your hair from being dry anyway

I think when it is dry, your hair, is like goin' kinky or a little bit dry and like standing out.
I think also when your scalp is totally dry.

first- cut off a piece of your hair.
second- put it in a plastic bag
third-feel it
fourth-decide if it's worthy to be tested
fifth- do the test
