You might start with a magazine from one of the big book stores - I just bought an accumulation issue of Model Railroading. if you don't have a railroad hobby store near you. Borders, Walden, Barnes and Noble. In the mags you will find references to web sites and ads for materials. You are probably going to have to skip over the first step most modelers do, which is to buy a kit like a house, store, or station and then paint it up to look as realistic or weathered as possible. You will have to look into the materials sections of catalogs and ads where you will find sheets that represent scale bricks, shingles, planking, stone, etc. If you spend some time you will find about people that build stuff to ultimate detail - cutting miniature planks for siding - laying plaster roads and sidewalks and grooving it like saw cuts and adding weathering - who may have useful tips online or in articles on how to buy and use materials you need for your special purposes. But your first step should probably be to look carefully at the scale of your "halloween village collectibles" [more probably "Halloween Village Collectibles" being a trademarked brand] if they maintain a scale and look at O, HO, N and other model rail gauges to keep from having to custom build all your materials.

Try Amazon.com; they've got a great selection, if you know for what title you are searching. Or check in the back of the model RR magazines; I know they have a greater selection of titles!
