Honestly, they've become hopelessly outdated....most of them are barely useful anymore.
I propose we just get rid of commandments 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 10.

So, they new 4 commandments would read as follows:

Honor your father and your mother
(This is useful and brings about a healthy relationship for both parties. If either party acts without honor, the deal is null and void.)

You shall not murder.
(This one doesn't really need any explanation)

You shall not steal.
(again, self-explanatory)

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
(lying just hurts everyone and should be avoided)

So, what do you think?

The old version just has so much dead wood that needs to be cut away.
There was one suggestion to simply cut it all the way down to "do no harm to others". That makes sense to me...

Serena - it's not that I'm for envy, but it just doesn't belong here. I don't think that anger is a very good thing, but it didn't even make it in the first time around.
Nor did melancholy/depression.

Dear Samurai,

i think Jesus summarized all the commandments in two simple commandments:

1) Love God with all your heart, soul, and strength.

2) Love others as yourself. (Love others in the same manner you would love yourself- sort of like the "golden rule" do unto others).

All 10 commandments can be summarized in these two commandments.

I understand in terms of your personal beliefs about leaving out the ones concerning: Not worshipping other Gods, using the Lord's name in vain, honroing the sabbath...

i noticed that you left you not committing adultery and not coverting your neighbor's wife. (Wouldn't you say that those are two awfully harmful things??) Wouldn't those two acts be pretty similar to lying (which you say hurts everyone). If the idea is to keep commandments which don't hurt people (i fail to understand why you'd exclude these two).

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

Jesus already changed moses' laws in the christian dispensation. [ Mat 5:27-28 ].

Hebrews 8:6-13

"...But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises.
For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said: "The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear..."

It was replaced because it was faulty.

Luke 16:16 "The (Moses') Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.

No, he did not edit them. He fulfilled them. 5:17 “do no longer imagine that I actually have come to abolish the regulation or the Prophets; I actually have not come to abolish them yet to fulfill them." And he summarized them. Matthew 22:34 - 40 the finest Commandment "listening to that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees were given together. one among them, an authority in the regulation, examined him with this question: “instructor, it really is the finest commandment in the regulation?” Jesus spoke back: “‘Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your ideas.’ it really is the first and best commandment. And the 2d is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as your self.’ each and each and every of the regulation and the Prophets hang on those 2 commandments.” And he clarified the regulation, that it became meant to be kept in accordance to the Spirit of the regulation, no longer the letter of the regulation. Romans 7:6 "yet now, by using demise to what once certain us, we were released from the regulation so as that we serve in the recent way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code." Romans 13:10 "Love does no damage to a neighbor. hence love is the success of the regulation." in spite of the indisputable fact that the Commandments preached by using Jesus are a similar because the ten Commandments preached by using Moses.

Actually, I also disagree with those 4. Of course they sound good, but not in all cases.

Should a daughter that had been abused by her father, still honor her father? I know you make the deal null and void then, but then the whole rule can better be deleted.

Murder? Yes, wrong. Except in pure self defense.

Stealing? A society is as strong as it treats it's weakest link. As long as we, as a society, allow the existence of homeless people, beggars on the streets and poverty around the globe, I fail to see why it would be wrong for a mother to steal a bread for her hungry child.

Lying? Sometimes it's needed to respect people. If my girlfriend asks me if a shirt makes her look fat, I'm not gonna say yes, sorry.

But actually, people have been editing the 10 Commandments for thousands of years;... and it's reaped them the reward of their names being edited out of the book of life.

But what is wrong with 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, & 10?

You shall have no other gods before Me (God).
(This is very useful in that other gods cannot save you from your mistakes and death, they can't feed you or clothe you or protect you from your enemies.)

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.
(God himself give the why for this one: For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.)

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
(He answers the why for this one as well: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.)

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
(This one I'm sure you'll not understand, but then, that's what it is for, coming to understand God and his Way of life.)

You shall not commit adultery.
(Because if you do, you might have some jealous husband chase after you with murderous intent, and the world will run rampant with STD's.)

You shall not covet
(Because otherwise you will make yourself sick with envy and convince yourself that it will be OK to lie, kill and steal to get those things you covet, and you will reap the rewards of those evils as well.)

What I think is that, a lot smarter people than you or I have said that the world would be a whole lot better off if only people kept the 10 Commandments.

H.M. GOVERNMENT
+HEALTH WARNING+
Breaking The 12 (10+2)
COMMANDments
SERIOUSLY damages YOUR health
it will kill "you"

THE
12 COMMANDMENTS
(10+2)

1. YOU shall love, honour, cherish and obey the Lord your God (love, good and truth) with ALL your heart, with ALL your mind, with ALL your soul and with ALL your strength and Him ONLY shall you serve and OBEY, forsaking ALL others.

2. YOU shall NOT create an image or likeness of ANYTHING that is IN HEAVEN, or on earth, or under the sea and YOU shall NOT worship or BUY such things. YOU shall NOT bow down to them or serve them for I the "I AM" your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate (or disobey) Me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love (and obey) Me, and KEEP My COMMANDMENTS.

3. Honour your Father in Heaven and KEEP His COMMANDMENTS; LAWS; Statutes; Judgements; Economic Policy; Agricultural Policy and Diet that He gave to YOU and your Mother, the British Nation Israel, His wife (metaphorically), at Mt. Sinai and make Him proud of YOU.

4. YOU shall NOT commit adultery, either physically, individually, or spiritually, nationally or individually but shall be FAITHFUL to God, your word and your spouse, also NOT committing adultery nationally by following the wrong examples of other nations.

5. YOU shall NOT use the Lord's name, unless you are speaking to Him, or about Him, then you will not waste His time or insult Him.

6. Love your neighbour (not physically) as much as, or more than, you love your "Self". Then you will not do wrong, or lie, to anyone - John 15 v 13.
Do NOT desire eagerly, or touch, anything that does not belong to you. It belongs to your neighbour, not you, and YOU must respect HIS property. Your neighbour is the person next to you and the person on the far side of the planet and everyone in between.

7. YOU shall NOT lie, even to your "Self".

8. Remember the Sabbath and KEEP it Holy. It is NOT wrong to do GOOD deeds on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was made for man. Man was not made for the Sabbath.

9. YOU shall NOT steal. Neither shall you make up your own laws to enable you to do so by deceiving people.

10. YOU shall NOT murder - kill illegally.

11. YOU shall love one another as much as I love you and in the same way - spiritually not physically - John 15 v 13. IF you DO this, ALL men will KNOW that you ARE my disciples and are exercising and learning "Self" discipline - Discipleship.

12. Judge no-one, so that you will not be judged, by God, for by whatever judgement you judge another, unjustly, you condemn yourself to the same punishment. Judging is God's job exclusively, as He is always unbiased, impartial, uncorruptible and just. He has given His judgements, in His Law Books given to you at Mt. Sinai, by which He judges those who break His Laws. There are NO other laws on this planet that are LEGAL. God has strictly FORBIDDEN man from making up laws (Deuteronomy 4:2). God's Laws are the same for everyone. God does NOT have separate Laws - one for the rich and another one for the poor.

I think you may have trouble getting christians to accept any type of change to the big ten. Even if they do completely disregard Number 1.

Jesus is not god people. He said so himself.

But yes, the ones you left are really the only ones that apply to real life today. I'm all for it.

People can barely make earthly laws without loop holes, and have a problem keep a few of the 10 commandments, and you expect them to honestly adjust the commandments?

There's more than 10 commandments... there's over 100. Don't you watch the discovery channel or the history channel?

At least that list is more updated than the actual list at Exodus 34, where the 10th commandment is to not boil a young goat in it's own mothers milk. Creepy.
