Christian baptism, according to the Bible, is an outward testimony of what has occurred inwardly in a believer’s life. Christian baptism illustrates a believer’s identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. The Bible declares, “Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life” (Romans 6:3-4 NIV). In Christian baptism, the action of being immersed in the water pictures being buried with Christ. The action of coming out of the water pictures Christ’s resurrection.

In Christian baptism, there should be two requirements before a person is baptized: (1) the person being baptized must have trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior, and (2) the person must understand what baptism signifies. If a person knows the Lord Jesus as Savior, understands that Christian baptism is a step of obedience in publicly proclaiming his faith in Christ, and desires to be baptized – then there is no reason to prevent the believer from being baptized. According to the Bible, Christian baptism is simply a step of obedience, a public proclamation of one’s faith in Christ alone for salvation. Christian baptism is important because it is a step of obedience – publicly declaring faith in Christ and commitment to Him, and identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.

Dear Josie,

The importance of baptism is obedience. Jesus did not need to get baptized but did to set an example to believers that we ought to.

Baptism it self does not save us. But very shortly after we are saved- it's good to get baptized to publicly declare that you've decided to live for Jesus (people typically get baptized at their church) where the church too can be a support and hold that person accountable to the standard which they have professed to live by.

It's kind of like asking why the Lord's supper is important. It's not necessary for salvation- but it's important to remember and honor Christ.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

Water baptism is merely a profession of our faith in Jesus Christ. The act itself, however, does not save anyone. The blood of Jesus does that.

It is the sacrament of incorporation into the community of faith.

In baptism, we become members of the church ... we become heirs of the long history of God's salvation ... we are born again by water and the Spirit.

Baptism is the act of the Holy Spirit through the community of faith.

"It is an outward expression of our inward faith. "

I was once taught that "southern baptist preacher" lie too. It's nowhere to be found in the scriptures. But it's spead like a plague.

Baptism is FOR the remission of your sins. It's for one who believes the gospel, has repented of his past sins and is ready to turn around, has confessed Jesus to be His Lord, and is willing to try to live faithfully until you die. That's bible. Can't find another way in the scriptures to "get into Christ".

I'd rather believe the Word of God:
"....BAPTISM NOW DOES SAVE US (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,)" I Peter 3 21.

Than the words of men:
"baptism is important as an outward showing of our step of faith into christ, but it WILL NOT SAVE US."

baptism is important as an outward showing of our step of faith into christ, but it will not save us. baptism is just a symbol of christ's death, burial and resurection.

I don't think that's correct at all. It's not about obedience and submission. John baptisted Jesus, remember? That's not why he did that. It's about faith.
