As soon as you used the word morally, you answered your own question.

The most common lie told to me was "I didn't see anything". Their failure to to be a witness, because they didn't want to get involved, delayed an arrest or even allowed a criminal to get away. That is a moral and ethical failure for many people.

Lies that actually aid the criminal or impede the police are chargeable offenses, usually something like; "Interfering with Police" or "Impeding an Official Investigation", etc. Different jurisdictions have different terms for it.
A written lie, a false witness statement, given under oath, is a Perjury offense.
These all are misdemeanor offenses usually carrying up to a year in jail or hefty fines.
Why shouldn't you lie to the police? Aside from moral, ethical, and legal reasons, your lie threatens your own safety. That criminal your lie just freed could very well be the guy that steals your car, molests your children, gets drunk and kills you in a traffic accident, etc.
Lies eat your soul, bit by bit. The thing that saddens and angers cops the most isn't mayhem on the streets, it's the blind eye and outright lie the average citizen treats crime with. You start to wonder why are you risking your life and wasting your time protecting people who won't even point a finger at the criminal.

Well it is wrong 2 lie period police or not but they might take it easy on you if they feel you are cooperating and being truthful and honest.
The trouble u can get in depends on the lie u told.
U can be let off with a warning.
U can go 2 jail.
U can be forced 2 testify.
U may have 2 pay a fine
it goes on and on it really depends on the lie and the crime.

Is it morally wrong? Do we assume that the police are always in the right, that the laws themselves are always just? We know that's not true. How about if the sheriff's asking which way those uppity civil rights agitators went? Or whether you know of any Jews hiding in your neighbor's attic? Circumstances can sometimes arise where it is indeed moral to lie to the police.
