Yes

It is used almost exclusively for inducing anaesthesia in children. During my last anaesthetic rotation (3 years ago now) we gassed down some primary school aged child who was needle phobic. Youngest patient I had at the returned soldiers hospital! :-)

Yes, we use inhalation inductions for children, and occasionally for mentally challenged adults.

We don't do it for adults because of "second stage" anesthesia, which is a period of excitation before reaching the deeper planes of anesthesia suitable for surgery. We can hold down a 3 year old, but not a 30 year old.

IV induction bypasses the second stage.

My local hospital uses IV paralytic and a sedative/hypnotic for induction and then gas for maintenance
