There is a famous quote that says something to the effect of "Religion cures the ills it inspires," meaning that it does indeed solve problems, but that more often than not it cause the problems in the first place.

Obviously religion can be a benefit to society: people donate to religious charities, build houses, and help others in the name of their God. However, it's just as apparent that religion can be a great detriment: people oppress religious minorities, persecute those who disagree with them, and wage wars in the name of their God. So is it more of a benefit or more of a detriment?

It's impossible to decide. Some people seem to need religion in order to behave morally. Still others seem to be all that much more hateful because of it. But given that there is no way to purge the world of religion totally without causing great detriment to society in the process, we have to put up with it. The best we can do is try to limit the negative effects of religion by raising consciousness about it in hopes that rational minds will prevail over superstitious ones more often than vice-versa.

While some religious groups obviously do great charity work... all in all, religion is still bad for society.

Religion divides us, just like race, national boundaries, language, etc. These differences make us afraid of each other. When we are afraid we (especially males) tend to be overly-protective and sometimes become aggressively hostile toward those how are different from us. One group of people never wage wars against another group, unless they can think of at least one key difference between them.

Furthermore, almost all religion is based on delusions which prevent us from thinking clearly and making good decisions.

I am so tired of the liberal rationalization of religion. Religion is a private thing and even if some academic found it "detrimental" to society are you gonna go Stalin on people and take it away. I think not, unless you want to take away the hope many people hold on to.

I believe that the improper practice of religion can be a detriment to society just like the proper practice of it can be a benefit to society.

Difficult to say. Individually, they can be accurately judged, but as a whole, I'm not sure.
