I purchased a LG front loader. It was installed today and used for the first time. I noticed after the first, second and now the third wash that there was a very musky smell in the drum. Should it be that way. I really don't like that. I want my clothes fresh. The clothes don't have a smell at all but the drum smell perculiar.

It was delivered in a box. It seems to be around the door, not really in the drum. My hubby doesn't smell it. I do have a sensitive snout. Maybe it is the rubber. I will keep an eye out or should I say my nose out.

was your lg washer a return or a scratch and dent item from your appliance store?

no lg should have a musty smell. i work with lg washers on a day to day basis and the only time that we notice the drum smelling musty is if the unit is a return. the water sometimes will sit at the bottom of the drum if not used for a long time (under the stainless drum) and will create a musty smell.

also pls remember to use high efficency detergent. regular detergent is more likely to smell musty because it is a different formula than regular detergent.

high efficency detergent has certain phosphates that stop molding. then again if you just got the product it should not smell musty at all.

there is also a rubber lining around the door which sometimes has a tire smell to it which you may be smelling also. you will smell the strong lining but if it doesnt smell like a tire definately see about returning the item....if it didnt come to your house new in a box it may just have been used.

pls note that you have a one year parts and labor warranty but it will not cover mold...and you have to pay a trip charge to get the lg repair main to your house (just like any other appliance manu.) the unit should not be molding especially if you just got it.

your appliance retail store should also have a return policy and you may want to swap the unit out.

Did you purchase this new or used? If new, this clearly should not be happening. I would read the owners manual and call the company for suggestions. If purchased used, mildew or mold growing on the rubber ring that seals the door is not uncommon.
Newer models have addressed this issue but it is still a problem with older models. The most common suggestion seems to be to leave the door open after using machine to allow it to thoroughly dry out and avoid mold & mildew growth.
