If you were not working and had no income from wages, then you cannot claim the Earned Income Credit--sorry! It is only for those filers that are low income but are working. You don't qualify if you ONLY get TANF benefits-you cannot count that towards your income in order to receive EIC.

Sorry about that! I had a friend that wondered the same thing because she was not working either (she was in college) and really needed the money raising her 2 daughters as a single mom.

You need to have EARNED Income to qualify for this credit

The EITC has no effect on certain welfare benefits. In most cases, EITC payments will not be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food stamps, low-income housing or most Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) payments.

If you didn't have any earned income for the year then no, you don't get an EARNED INCOME credit. TANF isn't earned income.

No, unfortunately you cannot. You have to have earned income to claim the earned income credit. Once you get back to work though, you will be able to claim it with income up to about $32,000 ($36,000 with two or more kids).
