Leaven is either like False doctrine.
Mat 16:11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake [it] not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
Mat 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade [them] not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Or good:
Mat 13:33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with everyone so far...
I think it is saying that "a little leaven" IOW a little yeast "leaventh the whole lump" i.e. "Causes the whole loaf to rise, and I think he means that sound doctrine in the heart of a sound believer has the capacity to raise the whole group (of believers). I don't think it's both...I think it's like the saying "A rising tide lifts all boats."
It's akin to the other verse that tells Christians we are to be "salt and light" in the world.
Yeast (leavening)is not as plentiful as the other ingredients (flour, etc.) in the bread, but is a critical ingredient; just as Christians are fewer in # than the general population....Salt is only a seasoning, but it changes the "taste" of anything (for the better, hopefully)...
Just my $.02

7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? 8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9 "A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough." 10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will have to pay the penalty, whoever that may be. 11 Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. 12 As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!
here is the complete passage.... to me it is saying a little goes along way...whether it be a good thing or a bad. it will corrupt the whole, or make the whole better.

I guess you never baked bread.
Here is the NIV of Gal 5:9"A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough." Which is an expression known by bakers everywhere.
Alternately, from the CEV: 9A little yeast can change a whole batch of dough.
Alternately, from the NLT 9 This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough!
From the Greek, little ferment (leaven) whole the kneading is-fermenting (is-leavening).
Answer: Jacobean English is four hundred years old. Like a good Shakespeare, it language is beautiful but will need some explaining.

This is a perfect example of why you cannot pull scripture out of context.
Go back to verse 7, Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? 8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. 9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in you through the Lord that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
This scripture is referring to the works of the flesh, and the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians deals with the law.
A little law spreads through the whole thing.
Paul was saying that the law was out and Grace was in.
Two key verses were
Gal 5:1
Gal 5:4.
Legalism is a trap.
It causes you to move away from the grace of Jesus and to a works program.
The works program didn't work for the Jews and it won't work for you either.
All really depends on just having a trust that Jesus saved you. You are forgiven. That you are reconciled to God. It is OK.
If there was a bill, it was paid. No more bill.
You don't have to pay anything back.

Galatians 5:7-9 "You were running a good race. who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. "A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough." (NIV)
In this verse/book Paul is outraged because he preached the Gospels in Galatia and everything was going great and as soon as he left some Jews started preaching their own version of the Gospel that wasn't true. Paul is outraged that so many Galatians were falling for this stuff when they knew it wasn't true, they had learned the truth! The verse is saying that something that one person does can affect the whole group.
Hope that helps!

In my family we always said " a little dab 'll do ya!" You know what this means. A little of a good thing or a bad thing will work its way through the whole. If you read the entire passage it is clear they are speaking of the bad kind and how it can work its way through an entire body of believers and bring disastrous results. If you go to Church you will see it happening. Gossip, dissent, bickering, the list goes on clear up to denominational-ism.

leaven was a type of sin in Scripture. It refers to the corrupting influence of sin and the fact that sin makes you guilty of breaking all the Law not just one part of it. Paul writes quite a bit about that concept. Hope this helps.

Leaven is a type of evil in the bible. It never (I repeat never) stands for anything good. It represents sin, false doctrine, and hypocrisy. so Paul is basically saying that it only takes a little bit of evil to corrupt someone. In this context, he was speaking on the subject of legalism.
