People are living longer (primarily due to modern medicine) and as a result are more prone to experience a chronic disease during their lifetime. For example type II diabetes generally shows up later in life, as well as many cardiovascular problems.

There is also the case that our environment has gotten worse and there are a lot more toxins in the air and food we eat. People seem to take less care of themselves than before - but that may be a poor generalization.

I think obesity in Americans play a big role. These days a lot more Americans are overweight, and this may make it harder for people to control these diseases
