It would depend on the shake - check with your doctor and get him/her to recommend the proper nutritional supplements (if any) for you. Just steer away from steroids! A good balanced diet (lean meats, lots of fruits and veggies, beans, tofu, milk, nuts, etc.) is usually enough for a young person - protein shakes can't substitute for a fast-food diet but if you're into body building then you're probably not eating junk food, right? As you build muscle your weight may change - be sure you don't get underweight.

Its fine for an 18 year old boy to have protein shakes. Its actully ok for anone really over the age of 5, as evrybody need s protein, this is just another form of it. But remember that he mite be getting enough protein already, as the body can only digest and get the nutrition out of certain amounts of food. Therefore the protein shakes may actually become a waste of money as the protein is not digested. And it can be bad to have too much (like with any other of the nutrients). You only need the protein shakes if you have a lack of protein in your diet, or if you are already ''buff'', because then you need more to support the already existing muscle. ITS MY GUESS THAT HE DOESNT NEED THEM, :) (i was not shouting just making my point clear)

It should be ok. When in doubt, check with a doctor or a nutritionist. I mean, age 15 is too young, but 17, 18, or 19 sounds like a great age to start. It's great that you are lifting weights, and yes, it is an excellent idea to start small and build up to greater weights. You don't want to overdo it, now, do you? Be careful in the gym, and have fun!! I find it best to bring along a few friends to pass the time with.

Absolutely. It'll be good for you as a good protein shake comes from natural sources and is packed with vitamins, minerals and aminos. Be sure to get a shake from a reputable brand that contains no suger and little fat.

yes, protein is protein...the human body can not tell the difference between amino acids derived from protein powders or meat, fish, poultry, etc.

protein powders are derived from milk with the exception of egg white protein and soy protein fractions. essentially they are just like powdered milk
