My indoor cat is catching her claws on the material she toches and makes a clickity-clack noise when walking. Are her claws too long? Should I cut them? How would I cut them? I don't want to hurt or impair her activities. Should I go to a professional? Who? Lots of questions here, any help will be appreciated!

Yes! Just because she is an indoor cat doesn't mean she should have long nails. I regularly cut my 13 cats' claws. They are, I think, much more comfortable then, because their claws don't get caught on everything, and they don't draw blood when they play with you. Mine do have access to a big outside play area, and still use their scratch pads. I lay them in my legs, on their backs, and use an ordinary clipper, just sideways, so that their claws do not chip while cutting. Some of them are so used to it that they actually go to sleep while I am doing it. Just make sure you don't cut them too short; just above the quick, (the little pink bit under the nails) and she will be fine, and she'll thank you for the care!

Of course its okay to clip them! I clip my kitty's claws all the time. It is a much more humane, and less painful option than having then declawed. Special claw trimmers are available from veterinarians or pet supply stores. Keep a styptic (astringent) pencil or powder on hand in case you accidentally clip into the quick (the pink part of the claw) and bleeding hasn't stopped within a couple of minutes.

Here's an article with instructions and some good pictures to help you.

Yes it's absolutely fine!!! We have four cats and we clip all their nails. Make sure you have a pair of animal nail clippers with a guard on it if you are just learning how. This will help you so that you don't clip them to far down. Don't get anywhere near the dark part of their nail because if you accidentely cut it the cat can bleed to death. Just cut the tips.

Yes; cats claws should be trimmed now and again. But since you've not done it before, best have it done by a professional. My cats' get their claws trimmed at their vets as part of the service everytime we go in for check-up. Other times, I trim my kitties claws myself - I just clip the very very tips becuase if you cut too close to the quick of the nail, it will injure your cat and the cat will never trust you to handle her paws again. If you go to your vet, a vet technician can show you how to properly trim your cat's claws.

You have to cut them with special clippers they sell at Petsmart. If you use regular people clippers the nail could split and hurt. If you have them and are going to cut them there's some visible pinkness on the inside towards the base of the nail, stay away from that. And if you are really worried about doing it yourself I know that at Petsmart they charge like $8 to cut a dogs nails. You can call and see if and how much for a cats.

I cut my cat's claws all the time. There's special clippers you can buy at pet stores. Just make sure you don't take off too much and get down to the quick where you'll draw blood. Typically, you don't wanna go more than halfway back from the end of the claw.

And be prepared for kitty to squirm! Mine STILL hisses at me to this day when I do it, and he's 4 years old.

Yes, her claws need to be trimmed. You can get a nail trimmer at a pet store. Be sure you just cut the claw. If you look at her claw you can see where the 'quick' on the inside starts. If she gets nervous about it just cut a few at a time. Or you could call a local pet groomer....they do nails too.

It's just fine to clip an indoor cats toenails, all you have to do is get a pair of clippers(heavyduty) or regular cat toenail clippers and just clip the very point, because if you cut into the quick they can bleed to death if you don't know how to stop the bleeding. Good luck, Mystic

It takes a lot of patience to trim your cats nails. I put them in my lap and grab their toes to hold. Some of my cats go crazy and I will do one foot and wait a while then do the other. All pet stores carry clippers for this. I personally do not use them. I like the control I get from my regular nail clippers and at their ages now, they know what they are and are not scared of them anymore. They just want to keep their nails. I like them short, because I have so many cats.

yes, this is perfectly fine. Just take a pair of nail clippers and clip the very tip of the cats nail off. But dont go far down, just until the sharp point is clipped. If you go farther this may her the cat.
