Good suggestions here.
My research indicates that a cult refers to a religious movement that follows the doctrines or teachings of a human leader. That would include the Catholic church, the Mormon church, Buddhism, Confucianism, as well as many of the more extreme cults like Jim Jones, Manson etc.

'The term 'cult' expresses disparagement and is usually used to refer to unconventional religious groups, though the term is sometimes used to refer to non-religious groups which appear to share significant features with religious cults. For example, there are some who refer to Amway and Landmark Forum as cults, others such as Scientology, the Order of the Solar Temple (74 suicides in 1984), Heaven's Gate (39 suicides in 1997), the Raëlians, the Urantians, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Transcendental Meditation program, the followers of Sathya Sai Baba or Prem Rawat, and the group that followed the Rev. Jim Jones to Guyana where more than 900 joined in a mass murder/suicide ritual in 1978."

I don't think it's accurate to call Mormons a "cult," even though you might not agree with them.

Heavens Gate, Branch Dravidian's, Jones town. Those would be some of the extremists. But in my opinion all Cristiano denominations are cults, ie blindly following one leader (usually the pastor/preacher)

Look up Jim Jones. He's one of the most famous. You might also wish to check out Charles Manson. His following was small but left a bloody trail.

The only difference between a religion and a cult is that a religion has political influence.
Hope that helps

A cult of Christianity puts something between you and Jesus. It's usually works as in Mormonism. It may have unbiblical doctrines such as praying to Mary and other saints for Catholics.
