Would anyone recommend them? Any further information would be appreciated. I am thinking of finally upgrading my 70's Panasonic road bike.

Are you talking about the modern ones that bikesdirect.com sells? The way I heard it, they bought the US rights to the brand name, and the bikes are made in some generic factory in the far East. Not that there's anything wrong with that - bikesdirect has a really good reputation and some of their deals are at incredible prices. They're basically a volume-based importer and direct shipper, cut out the middleman, buy in bulk type operation.

I just looked at this one:
http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/bottecchia/bzeuro_pre.htm

And that's just an amazing deal. The frame/fork is nothing too exciting, but the component group alone is worth almost that much at retail.

If you're talking about the older, steel Bottechias imported years ago, ignore them. Most of them were cheap mass-market junk, there are a few legitimate high-end handmade Italian bikes around in collector hands.

Good luck

Bottecchia makes an ok product. I think their exclusivity and quality has slipped since the days of handmade steel framesets. I"m fairly certain that the name was purchased and the bikes in the USA pretty much have nothing to do with the orginals. I used to lust after a Columbus tubed Bottecchia that was hanging in the local pro-shop. I now realize that it probably wasn't the best bike either.

I think there are better bikes out there personally. Cannondale's line of road bikes runs through every price level. Their carbon is excellent and their aluminum rides great. If you want European, I'd go with Pinarello of Merkcx. I trust both of these firms to make a top notch frame. Pricey, but tops. The Bottecchia is likely to be cheap. They don't put toooo much work into the frame so they can sell the bike for just more than the cost of parts. Motobcane is doing the same thing.
