A friend that used to be an accountant told us several years ago we needed to file 2 mostly identical 1040s, one in Her name with me as the spouse, and 1 in my name with her as the spouse. All the numbers would be the same, just the names reversed. Do I still need to do that?

if married filing joint, you will only need one 1040. The reason she told you to file two, 1040 was because there was more benefit to one spouse if filing single than there was filing joint. That was then. The Tax laws have changed and they favor married filing joint. File one 1040. The standard deduction will be greater. If you have kids, then you will get a bigger refund coz of additional exemptions.

I see why the friend "used to be" an accountant. No, that's not how it's done, and wasn't several years ago either. For a joint return, you fill out ONE 1040, with your combined information.

Maybe thats why your friend "used to be an accountant". Filing jointly simply means you are combining your income "jointly" on ONE return.

absolutely not
in fact, 2 forms would cause all sorts of confusion with the IRS
use one form, select the Married, filing jointly option and follow the instructions
