My Mum was born in India & my Granny's death was registered there too - we have my Mums birth certificate but cant trace granny's death (grandad died a long time ago so cant ask him, likewise all of granny's other relatives who knew her) - Im trying to trace both granny's death certificate & the birth/death/marriage certificates of other relatives in India.

The problem seems to be that Mum was born & granny died (& all the other births/marriages/deaths happened in the 1940's when control of India was being handed back to the people of India & both the British & Indian authorities kept completely different records, neither of which we can find as the people involved weren't in the British military.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - Mum's been trying to do this for years but doesnt know where to start so I thought I'd try to help.

When Brits are born, married or die abroad, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is supposed to register these events, then they are entered in ledgers at the General Register Office. Here's a bit more on the death registry. You should have no problem getting a copy of the info on Granny.

Have you visited the website for the Church of Latter Day Saints? They have all kinds of sources for tracking down ancestors, domestically and abroad.
