I have a 4 year old schnauzer/poodle mix (schnoodle) that has been housetrained for 3.5 years. He was crate trained, but we have not had the crate set up for over a year. Recently, he's been having accidents when we're not home, even for a short while. We thought he was getting worked up when we left so we put a bark collar on to calm him down which worked for a while. I really don't want to set the crate up again. Any suggestions?

Have you considered that he may have a bladder, kidney, or urinary tract infection?
When a formerly trustworthy housebroken dog reverts the first thing I would do is have him checked out by my vet!
The recent pet food recalls were causing kidney failure, were you feeding any of those foods?

Once health problems are ruled out, then the next step would be to go back to the crate. I'd rather see an animal crated than subjected to a bark collar any day; I am not sure why the collar would keep him from pottying in the house?
Something else to consider:
Has anything else in your home / lifestyle changed that could trigger the behavior change? Is he just pissed off (no pun intended) at you?

Your dog may have a urinary infections, stones or something else going on that is causing this. If your dog was fine for so long and then started this I would be concerned there is an underlying medical reason. Bring the dog into your vet have an examination done, a blood test and a urine sample to see if there is something else wrong. If there is nothing wrong then start over with your dog, pretend like it's a new puppy and you are house training again. Bring the dog out every couple of hours to go potty and when your not home confine the dog to a smaller area of the house such as a kitchen or bathroom (make sure there is nothing your dog can get into or hurt on). The best way to potty train a puppy is confine them to smaller area's until they learn where to go. Good luck.

I think there are several ways to do this.
1. When you see the dog do an accident, take him outside right then, and let him out OFTEN, When he uses outside, Give a reward.
When not at home, Get some puppy pads. and confine him to a small, but spacious room, This don't help training for outside, just in certain areas when he just can't wait.
But the key is Take him outside often, and reward when business is done out there,
I had a pup, that went out everytime the other 3 did. She Never had a single accident (that i know of :). Hope this helps

Either set the crate up again or bring her out after every meal/water time.

Also, you're going to want to clean up the stains. A vinegar solution (maybe 3 parts water, one part vinegar) should do the job without staining the carpet (overly much). That's important.

Maybe check for health issues, too.

Definitely get ur lil guy to a vet, he could have UTI or other bladder issues....Also if you have had any changes in ur life, he could be going through some kind of separation anxiety when you leave.....And the only other suggestion that may help...if he is not neutered, that could be the reason. I have heard of male dogs "marking their territory" in the house. I hope this helps!!!

EASY! Just leave him outside or leave the backdoor open. You could train him to yelp at the back door. And when you're not home, leave some pee mats by the door so if he can't go out then he pees by the door, but there is pee mats to help it not get on the floor. Take some time with him after he pees in the house and say, "No! You go potty outside! That's a No!" then point to the floor and the pee and say "no!" then point outside and say "good, go potty out side!" then point back to the floor and say no. reapeat this a lot. Then go actually outside, and point to the ground and say, "Go potty here!" Hope this helps.

what has changed in his life, could it be medical or maybe you have become alittle lazy about taking him out. But I would go back to the crate, and more attention
