...weather is going to be. I like it cool enough so that you can walk around and not feel too hot. Does anyone know what the weather is usually like around May time?

May it's a perfect time to visit Italy and no way weather can be hot. We have the highest temperatures by end June-July-early August. Don't worry you'll be able to walk as much as you like. I'm living in Tuscany, centre of Italy, where temperatures are in the middle of generally hotter south and colder north. In the last 20 years we have had an average minimum of 12°C (54°F) and maximum of 19° C (66°F)

It depends on which part of Italy. I lived in southern Italy for nearly two years, and May was usually nice and warm, but not overly hot. It didn't get really hot until August, and that's when the Italians all go on vacation.

Usually in May it's temperate; hotter in southern, but not so much as it in the past. Anyway, no need for coats, but also not overwhelmingly hot (usually happens in July/August, although in recent years June was hotter than usual). I think May and October are the best months for visiting Italy.
