I really can't decipher based on what all you put, but he seems to be too shy to make a move. I'd say if he asked you directly to prom, maybe I am wrong. The safe way to lead in to finding if he does like you - go hang out as a group with some mutual friends. It may not hurt to have him pick you up to go wherever you all go - this way after you all get done, you two can have some alone time where he may feel more comfy in talking with you. If not, mutual friends are pretty good (most of the time) in bringing couples together. When you are out, 'throw the guy a bone.' In essence, little things like a brush of the hand or sitting a little close may clue the guy in - plus it is a safeguard, keeping hints low on the radar, while out with friends in case he really doesn't feel the same way. Oh, If the guy pays, he likes you...gentlemen are few and far between! If push comes to shove (and you don't feel it is below you), you could ask him...make it on friendly terms if you don't feel safe. Tell him you want to see some movie but don't want to see it alone - even offer to buy the ticket if he drives or picks up dinner. Good Luck!
