I was looking at crime statistics in Houston. They have two categories: auto-theft and burglary of a motor vehicle. So what's the difference?

Auto-theft is when they steal the car.

Burglary of a motor vehicle is when the break into the car and steal the contents, or components like the stereo.

Burglary, I believe, is entering without consent.. whether you take something out or not. If you take something out of a car it's burglary and theft. If you take the whole car, that would be auto theft.

housebreaking is composed of breaking and entering into (or only entering into) unlawful, including breaking right into a persons' homestead and stealing their television. robbery is taking something, including grabbing a handbag someone left unattended.
