Why is that scholarships award based solely on financial need when there are sooo many government grants available for students who are financially needy. The students who qualify for financial need already get a lot of free money from the government so I dont think they need any private scholarships than students who aren't needy. Scholarships should be given to those middle class students who aren't poor enough to recieve aid and who arent rich enough to pay for college. It is not the student's fault that their parents worked hard in the past to get a well paying job and better opportunities for their children. We shouldn't be punished by being denied scholarships that award based on financial need if we have the same (and maybe better)qualifications than the needy children. Every time a scholarship app asks me "List any special circumstances that indicate financial need" I have nothing to write (and I'm not going to lie or make up some exaggerated story). This is unfair. You?

I agree. You'll need to focus on academic merit scholarships if you don't qualify for the financial aid ones. Unfortunately, competition for those is high. However, I failed to meet the "low" income requirements for college aid and I still managed to pull it off. Look at a wide number of schools (some will try real hard to get you and therefore will offer more). Also, don't be too afraid of student loans. I have one and it hasn't been a problem to pay off slowly.

Good luck from a fellow "middle-classer"!

I've never heard on any scholarships based *solely* on financial need, usually it's only a factor at most. And there are not "sooo many government grants". When your need is over 17,000 for a year at an in-state public school, you really think the government is going to cover all that?

So you think scholarships should only be given to middle-class students? How is that fairer? So smart poor students don't deserve a scholarship because they "get a lot of free money" already?

And also, I'm glad your parents worked sooo hard in the past. I guess that means mine are lazy then. Believe it or not, it is impossible for everyone in the country to have a good-paying job. Someone has to clean up after everyone else, or serve their food, or ring up their groceries or whatever. And their kids are entitled to a higher education too.

All i have to say is "AMEN!" I've thought about the exact same things! It just doesn't seem fair to me at all! It almost makes you want to lie just to be able to get some of those things. But i fully understand exactly how you feel! When i started filling out scholarships at the beginning of the year, i got so frustrated and i quit for a while!

There are lots of scholarships that don't require financial need you just have to meet other criteria. Check out www.fastweb.com and www.scholarships.com

i completly agree with you. How about the families that are married and they go back to school and they can't get help because they are married it is like they discourge marriage. My friend is single mom with 2 kids and she gets all kind of free grants. they even pay her daycare and half her rent
