I read this piece once on on Einstein. He was teaching a physics course and he asked his class for a show of hands for how many people were atheists. Most of the class raised their hands.

Next, he asked them to discuss amongst themselves and to come up with a figure for what per cent of all of the knowledge in the universe we humans possess, they came back with a figure of 10%.

He told them that he thought they were rather high in their estimate, but even if we humans do possess 10% of all the knowledge in the Universe that it was enough from a scientific standpoint, to conclude that there is no God. And so, he suggested, that at best one could support being Agnostic (open to the possibilty of a God), but not atheist (Concluding there is no God).

Interesting question. A person asks you 'Do you believe in God', and you answer, I do not know! When you answer in this manner, you are labeled as an agnostic. In its simplest form, agnostic, means without knowledge. So, I guess agnostics basically are saying that they do not have any evidence of God.

Agnosticism is the concept that the existence or non existence of any deity or deities is unknowable. For instance Agnostic Theists believe that there is a god or gods or goddesses but they don't know for sure. Agnostic Atheists don't believe there are any god, gods or goddesses but they don't know for sure. Then there are Agnostics who are in between Agnostic Theists and Agnostic Atheists who simply feel that the existence of any deity or deities is unknowable plain and simple.

Agnosticism is the view that the existence of God is impossible to be known or proven. The word “agnostic” essential means “without knowledge.” Agnosticism is a more intellectually honest form of atheism. Atheism claims that God does not exist – an improvable position. Agnosticism argues that God’s existence cannot be proven or unproven – that it is impossible to know whether God exists. In this concept, agnosticism is correct. God’s existence cannot be empirically proven or disproven.

I would call myself a spiritual agnostic. I doubt the existence of gods, but would not go as far as to declare that they do not exist. After all, reality is just in your head. There might be a "god" in your head and none in someone else's.

Agnostics are basically uncertain about where they stand as far as whether nor not they believe there is a God or Gods. Their stance is that they don't know, there is no proof either way, so they are not going to argue in favor of one or the other.

Well, a friend of mine who claims to be agnostic, explained it to me like this. He doesn't necessarily believe in God, but believes there is a higher power that controls the natural elements of the world and the universe. He neither confirms nor denies that he believes in a diety. He doesn't believe what can't be shown to him, in other words he does not live by faith, but by what can be seen and felt.

Agnostic means you are not sure about the existence of God. You don't believe in it, but you don't disbelieve it either. It is sort of sitting on the fence.

One allows for the possibility of the existence of god as well as the possibility of the non-existence of god. It usually entails a belief that we can never know until death.

We don't have proof for or against a higher power, so we admit there is no way to come to a sound conclusion.

*It's not sitting on the fence.
