I got 10-mile walkie talkies and they were working fine to start out - around the block, testing a little further, etc. Perfect. But as soon as I started to drive away from the other person, the connection got staticy and then dropped altogether - and I was not a mile down the road!

Our houses are 5, maybe 6 miles apart and we get nothing. Could it be the fact that bad weather was coming in? Or the fact that they're cheap? Or the fact that there are many housing communities and trees around here in our area? I realize it could be any combination of those factors and others, but I was just hoping for some insight or tips for these to work for us from one house to the other.

Thanks!

They are the Uniden GMR1038-2, running on 4 AAA batteries. 22 channels, up to 99 subcodes, 10 mile range.

Those range claims are totally false! The links below will give you plenty of good info on GMRS.

Those radios will get you maybe a mile at best. Manufacturers grossly inflate these range claims to sell more products.

Also, make sure if you use the GMRS frequencies, you have a GMRS license. Regulations require this.

That is one model of several dual use FM radios. You can only operate them on the FRS (family radio service) channels 8 through 14 with out an FCC license and the max. range over water is about 5 miles. In the type use you described, you will be lucky to get consistent use much over a 1/2 mile.
In the GMRS (general marine radio service) your best (again over water - line of site) may be up to 10 miles (all channels except 8 to 14) and only with the proper FCC marine radio service license. You may be better off to get a pair of true 5 watt CB radios as even the full 5 watt hand helds (Cobra, Uniden etc.)) even with just a rubber duckie antenna will do about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 miles range in most all conditions. With the two of them that makes the "umbrella" of operation about 5 miles on average. Depending on weather etc. that "range" can be quite a bit more.

Those are FRS and GMRS radios, I have yet to see one go very far!! I don't know how you could get 10 miles from one of those, unless a friend was in line of sight with you from a mountaintop!! Most of them are good for a few blocks at best!! They even have 5 watt models....still junk...

It could be interference from other walkie-talkies. Some walkie-talkies can't go through buildings and houses unless you have expensive like ones they would use for work with a long antennae.
