This depends on what kind of dye you are using. If you are using a Procion Dye, that you can get from online sources like www.dharmatrading.com or www.prochemical.com
you will need to set the dye in a chemical fixative some call Soda Ash. Those two companies sell kits for tie dyeing and the dyes retain their color thru many washes, and besides are just as easy to apply as the grocery store ones. Still, you have to mail order or if you are lucky an art store might have them. That's the dye my kids use and our campers too.

I still do that, I thought I was the only one that did!
Always rinse your died product in salty water it fixes the dye, but wash it separately afterwards for a couple of washes just to make sure.

Use Ritz Dye. You can find it at the grocery store. To set any color use salt disolved in water

Check with the manufacturer. Todays dyes are much beter than earlier. If you're making your own I recommend vinegar. Thats what is used at easter, right?
