There's a man who deeply, sincerely, utterly believes in God, Jesus and Christianity. However, he is also a Mafia boss, has killed 6 men with his bare hands, has dealt in drugs, guns and prostitution and now, in the later part of his career has become a top figure in international money laundering. But he accepts Jesus with all his faith and with all his heart.

Then there is a women. She went to nursing school and, upon graduation, got a job working in a pediatric cancer ward. She discovered that this was her life's calling and devoted her entire career to taking care of kids with cancer. However, she saw too much pain and suffering to believe in a kind and loving god and became an atheist.

So the question is - Who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell and Why?

My two cents worth -

If the Man goes to Heave and the Women goes to Hell then faith must be the most important thing but Heaven would be filled with bad people and Hell would be filled with good people.

If the Women goes to Heaven and the Man goes to Hell then works are just as important as faith which makes sense to me.

If you don't know which - then you don't know what the requirements are for Heaven and Hell.

But that's just my two cents worth.

From the Christian perspective this is a major topic of controversy, as either way it can be used against the faith. Generally they use the "no true Christian" excuse.

For many other religions, this is no problem. There is no hell in Hinduism, for example.

God decides by grace alone. We can't judge by externals; judging requires omniscience. I would like to think that God is all-wise and just and can be counted upon to do the right thing. I call it simple faith. No,observing religious norms is no ticket to heaven, all bought and paid for - nor is discouragement with life - with creation - any reason to conclude an evil disposition; I would think just the opposite: the more idealistic, the more quickly disillusioned or embittered. As far as the "I've done all the observances" type is concerned, well,we Christians (Lutheran in my case) often take the view that people who think they're all squared away with God may be setting themselves up for one nasty surprise. Living by Christ's teachings is more important than running around quoting Him a lot. And there are people, with no religiosity whatsoever, who are more purely Christian in their values than a lot of compulsive Bible-thumpers.

Wow! That situation you described is SO similiar to what I asked a priest when he was in my 8th grade Catholic School class. He said, as long as anyone, good or bad, says the Act of Contrition before death they will go to heaven.
He could not answer my other question about, "What kind of God would do that to someone?"
It makes you wonder what God would really do, since he is "All Merciful".
I choose to believe if you lead a good life, and are truly sorry for your sins, you will certainly attain Heaven's just reward.
I was also told that suicide is killing, and you will not go to
Heaven if you commit suicide.
I see suicide as a result of a mental illness, not a criminal act.
You asked a very good question.

Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.
If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)

If salvation were not by faith alone, then Jesus' message in the Gospel of John - manifest in the above quotations - would be deceptive, stating that there is one condition for salvation when there are allegedly two - faith and works.
I must emphasize that we are saved by faith for works. Works are not the condition of our salvation, but a consequence of it We are saved not by works, but by the kind of faith that produces works.

Eph 2:8-10 God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for this: It is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

If the first man accepts Jesus with all of his heart whether he was a mafia boss or not, he will be saved. If the woman who devoted her life to caring for the children does not accept Christ as her Lord and Saviour she will not go to heaven because she does not believe on the Lord. Without the shedding of Jesus' blood on the cross there will be no remission of sins. the reason the first man will be allowed into heaven has to do with where he placed his faith, not in what he did before. The woman without faith in Christ will go to hell because she did not believe on Jesus. He is the only person by which we can be saved. His shed blood satisfies God's justice as full payment for our sin debt a debt we cannot pay ourselves. If she does not receive that by trusting in Jesus then that is where she will be. Being good is not enough it is trusting in Jesus. His perfect obedience by His death on the cross and us individually trusting in Him alone to save us will take us to Heaven to be forever with the Lord. Sins are transgressions against a holy God. God is altogether love and altogether just. His love sent Jesus to die in our place and we have to accept Him in sincerity as having paid our personal sin debt on the cross. Any one that comes to God through Jesus will be accepted. No one will be cast out. I hope this answers your very good question. Have a blessed day! Dana

Christians have a loop hole that seems to work for them. You can be the worst person on earth but if you have the last rites before you die they believe they will go to heaven. Confession is what you do to so you don't feel bad about the wrong you do. Isn't being sorry just as good... with out going to a priest and confessing?

Technically The Thug is Heaven bound because of his faith in Jesus finished work on the cross. But he wouldn't be doing those things if he believed. The Holy Spirit wouldn't allow it.
The woman is hell bound for thinking that her works would make her worthy before GOD.

If Michael Jordan and I were both swimming to Hawaii and we jump off a pier to start our journey does it really matter that he jumped 20 feet further then I did?

You are going to have to rely on Jesus to get you into Heaven. It would be the same as taking an Airplane to Hawaii.

Hell was originally meant to Satan and his angels

"Mat 25:41 Then will he say to those on the left, Go from me, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire which is ready for the Evil One and his angels: "

God wills men to be saved

1Ti 2:4 Whose desire is that all men may have salvation and come to the knowledge of what is true.

But there are men who will go to hell because of following Satan.

Rev 21:8 But those who are full of fear and without faith, the unclean and takers of life, those who do the sins of the flesh, and those who make use of evil powers or who give worship to images, and all those who are false, will have their part in the sea of ever-burning fire which is the second death.

Those who follow the will of God will go to heaven

I feel that we spend eternity pretty much the same way that we have lived our lives. It's not a reward/punishment kind of thing. It's more like a refinement of the quality of the choices that we have made while we were living this material existence.
