Without adjusting the timing there would be no difference . With a higher octane fuel the timing can be increased and so would performance . Technicaly the mpg would improve with the timing advance but not really enough to notice.

Depending on what additives are used to raise the octane rating, you might get even worse mileage. Ethanol, for example has a much higher octane rating but almost 1/2 the mpg as regular gasoline.

The best way to optimize mileage performance is to keep it properly maintained and proper tire pressure. A better " quality "of gas and not necessarily octane will help mileage.
76 and Chevron are the top two. They are also the most expensive. But they tend to be the least "watered down". Also try a good fuel system cleaner. I recommend one made by a company called LUCAS.

Somebody please explain how gas can be "watered down". Water and gas don't mix. Gas is gas is gas. Study done 2 weeks ago shown on Good Morning America proved it. They took samples from major oil company stations and from small independent stations and tested the gas in a lab. The only difference in the gas was that some of the majors add a little more detergent. All gas has detergent by federal Law. Buy the cheapest you can find with the recommeded octane rating for your car. Oh yeah and stay away from Citgo. Not because the gas is bad, but because it is owned by the government of Venezuela.

Not enough to justify the extra 10 cents/gallon for 89 octane.

Negative. 87 octane burns slower therefore last longer. Higher octane will Improve performance and burn faster. Besides, higher octane Is Solly for sport cars.

no it will not. the only reason to have higher octane is because higher compression engines need higher octane to keep from "pinging"

No it will not. Your just wasting money if you do, sorry. Keep the vehicle properly maintained and the tires inflated properly to get the best mileage.
